Liston stopped Marshall in the rematch as well. Chocklab did not mention this.

That is my point.

 

Why did I need to mention that Marshall got stopped once when he lasted the distance either side of these three fights?

Davis had a 60% ko record what is the relevance of him koin'g Marshall? Ted Lowry went the distance twice with your hero Marciano ,yet was kod by journeyman Rusty Payne ,and lhvy Harry Mathews.

 

Liston stopped Marshall right after he lost to him, I never forgot this. So at one win each, (in the rubber match) the tough Marshall survived the full distance one more time (a second time) in their third meeting so there is nothing dishonest about Marshall making it to the last bell twice versus Sonny.

In 1971 Sonny is unlikely to be better than he was against whitehurst. Just saying.

 

so you are comparing a guy like peralta with record 77-5 or so with a bum like marshall?

It was December 1969 and I'd pick that version of Martin to beat Chuvalo.

 

Martin v Liston was a good fight. Take away what know about both guys this is still a world level fight. A war. Both guys dug deep and there has to be a lot left for both guys to perform like that at this level.

Sure Liston was better in 1960. But what is forgotten here is how good Jimmy Ellis was during this period. He beat Martin. And in 1971 he gave George Chuvalo quite a beating. Jimmy thrashed George.

So who ever was better, George or Sonny, one thing is for sure, they are both behind Jimmy Ellis level here. With Frazier being above all of them.

So yes, Martin beats George but both are some way below Frazier and Ellis level at this point.

George and Sonny are the same kind of level at this time because they get beat by all the same kinds of guys.

Good points and posting. Ellis at his best was a very good boxer with some pop in his right hand, yet at his best most had a past his best Patterson beating him (I had it a draw) so Ellis was also a clear step below Frazier and Ali.

I would put them in order of Frazier, Ali, as THE best Heavyweights around that time. You would have to put Patterson, Martin and Ellis above Liston and Chuvalo because of the level of guys Patterson, Ellis and Martin were beating then compared to Liston.
