It was 107 degrees that night if I remembered the quotes correctly, but Robinson was in fact outclassing the bigger maxim until he succumbed to heat exhaustion. It supposedly took Robinson 6 months to recover fully from that fight and he was never the same again. How different would his career have went if he fought maxim on a much cooler day? I think he would've beaten him and went back to conquering the middleweight division. Discuss.
I mean I don't know if this is the answer you are looking for because it's obvious, but he was way ahead at the time of the stoppage, so he probably goes on to win the decision. Would have been interesting if he hadn't retired for 2.5 years following this fight.
Maxim might pick up a controversial points win, because he could use his standard high volume spoiling stye in cooler temperatures like he did against Patterson. Maxim claims he went stalker and gave up points to force Robinson to fatigue himself in the heat. Maxim also claims he didn't have an air conditioner in his corner.
Ray wins a clear decision, he was skating their fight .Robinson was conceding Maxim 15.5 lbs, the idea that Maxim was boxing to some master plan is BS imo. Ray retired at the end of the 13th He was well in front, light hitting Maxim could only win by a stoppage, to suggest it was a deliberate ploy is fanciful ,he was outboxed round after round. Ray was using lots of lateral movement to confuse the almost stationary Maxim and negate his best weapon, his jab that and conceding all that weight were what beat Robinson. I haven't looked because he is on ignore but I made a bet with myself that Bubble & Squeek repeated that silly quote about the air conditioner.:yep
This one again. I give Maxim full credit for the win. I assume he'd be fighting at a much higher capacity in regular temperature and humidity and would have won the fight. SRR's win record against good light-heavyweights is non-existent.
Maxim won the fight. He outlasted his opponent. I'm not sure why there would be any reason to prove he had a "master plan" or a "deliberate ploy". He doesn't require either. So what was SRR's "master plan" and "deliberate ploy" ? To outbox Maxim for 13 rounds then collapse in his corner ? I assume both guys were in there to win. There was a winner and a loser. It still grates on people that SRR was the loser. Fair and square. Both fighters would certainly have prefered to be fighting in normal humidity and cooler temperatures. But that wasn't how it went down. SRR might be the greatest fighter ever but he was fighting well above his weight class, against a full-sized light-heavy who was actually very good and durable. That's the reason he lost. He just wasn't able to do it as a light-heavyweight.
Conserving your energy in extreme heat could be a master plan, or just common sense...I suppose it depends.
Well, yeah, I suppose. Even if Maxim only had a "master plan" to last the distance, that turned out to be a better plan than what Robinson came up with.
