George is one of my favorites but many HWs would have beaten him on that night. No educated jab, no precision punching, no nothing. Just flailing away with winging punches. It was a disgusting performance. He tired himself out after a handful of rounds, and he was screwed after that. Had he fought like he did in the 90's, he would have had an excellent chance vs Ali.
People say Ali "looked good" in this fight but I don't see it that way. If you are completely stationary, constantly backing to the ropes(which were very loose btw) and allowing a guy to take free punches to your body and head that is not a good performance according to the goals of boxing, which is to hit your opponent without being hit as much yourself. It shows toughness,ok, but it is a very stupid strategy against an opponent who is patient and accurate with their punches. If the opponent does not fatigue you are either going to lose a decision or get knocked out.
Ali was throwing way too many lead right hands which is just asking to get countered with a right hand. Against a big, tall heavy with a sharp shooting right cross like a Klitschko or a Lewis to a lesser extent, every time Ali throws that lead right he's gonna be eating those right crosses.

Hard one to call, but I'd slightly favor Liston.

Dempsey would have effectively boxed Foreman until he saw an opening then he would have exploded onto him. Going in and out. Way too fast for Big George.

dempsey and louis were ringside in the fight norton vs foreman, and they were intimidated by the power of george.
" he is without a doubt the strongest and hardest hitting guy that we ever seen in a ring"
dempsey should not be allowed to be in the same ring with foreman, no small cruiser should be allowed to join in a ring with george foreman, go to comment about the galaxy war nerd, you never ever trained boxing so just shut up

Any other version of Foreman would have been the only person besides Ali to beat Zaire Foreman.

Bert Sugar never boxed a day in his life but I guess that made his opinion irrelevant. Show me where you got that quote because I looked and looked for it searching various titles as well as the quote itself and couldn't find any trace of it.

I'm thinking just about anyone tough enough to smother for four rounds. Let's not forget how naive George was shooting his load like that every round. punching in that "left right left right left right" robotic way. It was the worst he ever fought.

George showed huge potential beating Norton and Frazier but those fights went completely his way. The fights that came before were among the most ludicrous mismatches in history so there was very, very little for George to draw upon if a world level fight went any kind of distance. Coming out of his two biggest fights so raw like that practically left George naked.

Ali gets an awful lot of credit for beating a very raw, albeit strong kid.

Ernie Terrell, Tim Witherspoon, Tommy Farr, Mavrovick even Jimmy Braddock could get through those first four rounds if George fought as silly as he did that one time. Maybe they still get beat but George fighting like that is 50-50 with most fighters after 4rounds. It's half the battle.

    1"JohnThomas,

Fighting as bad as he fought against Ali without the accuracy of his fights versus Frazier and Norton I see these guys all beat raw Zaire Foreman who fought like a rank amateur.

    Holmes
    Lewis
    Tyson
    Holyfeild
    Liston
    Tokyo Douglas
    Jack Johnson
    Gene Tunney
    Jack Dempsey
    Rocky Marciano
    Jim Jeffries
    Prime Joe Frazier

The problem is George had to go all the way until Ron Lyle to actually win a competative fight. He could have done with that BEFORE facing Ali.

A "blow out" is great but it never shows what the other guy had. It just shows the other guy never got going.
