    Hey guys,

    So I posted yesterday saying I'm new to boxing and just started with a trainer, I have a couple of questions - the first one being;

    1) I used to be into bodybuilding, so am retaining a fair amount of muscle mass at the minute - however I need to shed that (and some of the excess fat I have from my most recent bulk phase) - normally, I'd just jump onto a cutting program and do alot of high volume weight lifting - however I've been advised that a boxers workout regime should be almost all about increasing fitness levels - anyone got a good base routine I can work from? And also - I'm assuming that the dietary requirements will be fairly similar to that of a bodybuilder, however maybe increasing the intake of low GI carbs?

    2) I'm currently based in the UK, however spending summer in Philadelphia, PA with my girlfriend - hoping to continue boxing in Philly and I'm sure theres no shortage of decent boxing gyms - but just on the off chance, has anyone been to or heard of any that are good/bad? Just so I know what to watch out for!

    1) You have to get your stamina up before you can do any boxing.

    *For when you can jog at a fair pace 1-2 miles without feeling too tired*

    30 seconds to 1 minute rest maximum between rounds

    3x3 of jump rope no rest

    2x3 minute rounds of shadowboxing to warm up and work on technique. Shadowboxing is not about gaining speed or power because you will get neither but about having correct technique. Go slow and focus. Then when you hit the bags go full speed.

    -After you train for a few months your trainer may feel it is time to spar. So you will most likely spar right after shadow boxing.

    3x3 minute rounds on the heavy bag.

    2x3 on the double end bag (rhythm which is very important in boxing)

    2x3 on the speed bag (for hand eye coordination and timing)

    You should work on the heavy bag, double end bag, and shadowboxing as if you are in a bout with an opponent throwing punches back at you.

    2) James Shuler Boxing Gym

    Thanks for this! It's funny you mention the James Shuler gym, I had an email from them this morning after I enquired the other day!

    Another one I was looking at was Joltin' Jabs? Ran by a guy called Joey DeMalaves?

    I'm not from philly but if I was there James Shuler would be the place to go. Honestly, you can't go wrong with boxing gyms in Philly!
