ATG James Toney is set to fight on July 16th in Tallahasee Florida, headlining a Roy Jones promoted fight card. His opponent will most probably be former HW contender Travis Walker, although this remains to be confirmed.

What are your thoughts about this fight? Does 47year old Toney, who lost a decision to C-level journeyman Charles Ellis one year ago, have a chance to somehow turn back time and get the win in this one? And if so, would this win even mean something?

IMO Toney should have retired years ago, he has secured his legacy a long time ago and he has no business inside a boxing ring anymore as he his shot to bits and pieces. If he continues he'll eventually get stopped or KOed, and by a much lesser fighter.

Still, he's my alltime favourite fighter, so I'm still following him, and it just seems that nobody can keep that man away from a ring, no matter what...

Charlie Ellis isn't/wasn't even a C-level fighter, that's being generous.

I don't know if Walker will be the first to stop Toney, but he'll certainly beat him at this point.

Edit - On second thought, nobody wins, lol. Had no idea Walker had lost seven in a row, and eight of nine. Guess it seems like a spot what Toney could get a win and maybe retire?

High chance of Toney finally getting stopped here. Those slipping in the pocket skills have slipped, and Toney at this age isn't going to be pulling any quick and coordinate prestidigitation to block punches, and Walker hits a LOT harder than some of the low-grade heavyweights that have stunned the old blob in recent years.

...and Lights Out might have at one point carried up just enough pop to HW (never more than average by the division's standards) to crack glass cannon Walker's fragile whiskers, but at this point with his workrate, dexterity and general fitness being so diminished I have a hard time seeing him mustering enough clean hits to actually do the job.

Win or lose, hope he does not take any serious damage. If you can not win against a fighter like Ellis, it is really time to retire.

Shame to see Toney carry on. Immense character but whatever aura he had has long since dimished.

How is Toney still being licensed to fight? Just watching some of his interviews and it's clear he has some brain damage.

He has been losing lately to guys that can hardly be considered journeymen. Toney is likes to fight but he should just start passing that knowledge on though training fighters.
Live vicariously through a young buck. If he gets clipped like you predicted, the doctor's should pull his license.

At least this fight is two names that used to mean something. Might as well throw Rahman a bone. Travis Walker probably has the weakest chin in the sport and it can only be worse now days. Toney KO's him in 3!

If he wants to kill himself in the ring let him go, he'll eventually kill himself in the burger shop so what's the difference.
