I'm not arguing who won. The stupid idiotic saying that the champion has to be defeated convincingly to lose the title. By your standard all close rnds goes to the champ.

Yeah I think that age old adage applies to some fights but not this fight.

I think that adage really applies to like legendary champions who are getting older and escape decisions by jabbing and being the champ when the other guy is outworking him.

In this fight Thurman may have been the champ, but he was really landing impressive power punches and truly winning the majority of the rounds. He staggered Porter, he was effectively countering the aggressor. So I agree with you lobk that Thurman being the champion isn’t why he won. Like I think you’re making the point that Thurman’s status as champion isn’t why he won. I think we see that Thurman won the fight convincingly and by someone else saying that Thurman won because he was the champ kind of takes away from what Thurman did in that ring.

I'll rewatch it when I get the chance regardless of who I pick I try to judge fights neutrally, for me I liked Shawn's work better wasn't too impressed with Keith he landed a few good shots after the 4th I thought Thurman would take over had the 5th to Thurman, but I felt Porter could of had Thurman out of it towards the 8th/9th rd, I will say Keith responded well in the last 2 and won both on my card overall though Porter looked more comfortable in there.

 

I'm still shocked that Haymon put on a competitive fight.

 

I'll post my live thoughts that I do in a Word document that I had throughout the fight. This is only basic stuff with not much insight to be honest and sometimes I forgot details (like maybe what punch was precisely thrown) while quickly summarising after rounds but anyway...

Thurman-Porter

1. 10-9: close round, cleaner work froM Thurman but Porter busier. This will not be an easy fight to score.

2. 9-10: clear Porter round.. landed a stiff right hook and then went to work on Thurman against the ropes with a very high work rate and some decent accuracy. Thurman smothered and Porter with a big round.

3. 9-10: Porter slightly busier and landing more shots – he’s the aggressor, but Thurman lands a PEACH of a right hand toward the end of the round – best punch of the fight – and then Porter fires back. Good good fight!

4. 10-9: BIG ROUND Thurman, who keeps catching Porter coming in with the left hook. He lands a huge left hook later and explodes with a torrent of offence on Porter who fires back himself but just lacks the accuracy of Thurman.

5. 10-9: Fairly quiet with Thurman shutting down Porter’s pace with that curshing 4th round, but 2 mins in and both explode with a flurry of combinations and then Thurman produces the cleaner sharper work up to the end of the round.

6. 10-9: Close round but Thurman still cleaner and he landed the best punch of the round with a stiff straight right.

7. 10-9: It was a close round but it looks like Thurman has sapped the energy and some of the strength and will out of Porter, who is no longer willing to be much the aggressor.

8. 9-10: Porter has Thurman reeling with a crushing body shot. Close round still.

9. 9-10: Thurman still winded from the bodyshot maybe? His signals look very negative, as Porter keeps working hard and is back to smothering Thurman. That bodyshot has turned the tide of this fight quite stunningly. Thurman bothered by his left eye and looking ragged for the first time.

10. 10-9: Thurman commanding on the outside as Porter’s work rate dropped. Thurman lands a HUGE right and Porter could have gone down! Bedlam to end the round as Porter responds! Best punch of the fight landed by Thurman.

11. 10-9: Thurman landing the better shots and controlling from the outside.

12. 9-10: Close, but gave it to Porter on workrate with not much real quality landed.
