Well it got Jones pretty damn far in the sport of boxing for one. And it shows that Roy Jones has actually got heart and the competitive spirit to AT LEAST TRY TO WIN. Hopkins wasnt even trying to win vs Kovalev. If Current Roy fought Kovalev, he assuredly would probably get stopped, but at least theres a small chance that he could catch Kovalev with something early. (unlike Hopkins who hasnt had a KO in damn near forever) Like even against Enzo, Roy was landing impressive quality punches that were rocking Enzo and winning him rounds before getting stopped. Hopkins couldnt win a decision over the motivated Enzo that fought Roy that night while Roy could. And thats a fact Jack!
Any man who can run from Kovalev over 12 rounds with even partial success deserves a ****ing medal, especially a grandad like Hopkins! If I could do that **** at his age I'd consider myself king of all kinds of ****.
I had Porter winning 1,2,3,5,7,9,10. 7-5 Porter, but it was by no means a robbery. It just looked to me as though Thurman was trying to survive in there for much of the fight, and do be fooled about Porter's power. He throws a lot of looping shots and his better opposition is fully braced for his best punches. Thurman has simply proven his doubters wrong about his own chin. Though IMO, Porter was backing Thurman up with his power shots, whereas Thurman merely forced Porter to continually reset. Very workmanlike decision from Thurman, albeit too tough to honestly give either the fight. A draw would have been the best result IMO. Either one of them KO Garcia, but I think Vargas and Brook probably beat either of the 3. Bradley would lose to all the afformentioned fighters. His wars with Provo, Rios, Pac, Marquez, Chaves etc have simply taken too much from him. :think
But like I said, as great as Roy was...he will now be remembered as a punchbag and probably end up with health problems later on. Hopkins, Mayweather, Ward etc have the right idea.
OK, look man thats the whole thing. At least James Bone Crusher Smith staggered Mike Tyson in the final seconds after running the entire fight. That was more deserving of a medal than Hopkins going 12 rounds vs Kovalev. Hopkins didnt even have partial success vs Kovalev. He had zero success. And frankly the only reason Hopkins didnt get stopped is because Kovalev had too much respect for him to try to hurt him. If Kovalev wanted to hurt Hopkins and end that fight, he could have at ANY time. Tyson on the other hand simply couldnt find Smith. I mean yeah its impressive that Hopkins was 50 and all, but it was a ridiculous performance. What Hopkins did beating Jean Pascal in their 2nd fight was impressive. That fight Hopkins truly won the fight and was an amazing achievement. But his performance vs Kovalev was pathetic. I have respect for Hopkins and his defensive style, but vs Kovalev was just ridiculous. Nothing about what Hopkins did in that fight should be commended. Literally hiding the entire fight, proving Joe Louis wrong. Hopkins proved you can run and you can actually HIDE!
Hopkins is human like the rest of us, when he realised Kovalev's style was all wrong for him at that stage of his career I guess hiding was all he had. What else was he to do?
Yeah, in theory, but it wasnt real. Kovalev wasnt trying to be devastating. Kovalev LET Hopkins go 12 rounds. Ya cant deny that.
Maybe, but the guy was ****ing ancient, he probably felt bad humiliating him. Hopkins' style allowed him to carry on long after his time but Kovalev was all wrong for him at that stage. **** happens! When I'm 50 I'll be happy that I can still find the strength to beat my missus up let alone Sergey Kovalev.
I thought Porter edged it myself but it was no robbery as such maybe a draw. Would like to see a rematch.
Im not debating that Hopkins being able to fight in his 40s at such a high level isnt worthy of incredible praise. Hopkins is amazing to be able to do that, and its worthy of everyones respect. But all Im saying is the version of Hopkins that fought Kovalev was not worthy of any praise. At that point Hopkins was clearly beyond done and it annoys me that many people praise that performance simply because he was 50 and because they have respect for Hopkins. I give Hopkins massive props for his entire career and fighting into his 40s and doing so competitively but I can definitively say his performance vs Kovalev was truly pathetic. He didnt do anything offensive in that fight. Like so many people were like Hopkins is so amazing because he went 12 rounds with Kovalev at 50. I could have gone 12 rounds with that version of Kovalev (who wasnt trying to hurt his opponent simply because he was 50 and a legend). Its an important point because you know damn well that many people get highly motivated to fight Roy Jones due to how good he is, and fighters dont get as motivated to fight Hopkins because you know hes got no punching power. Point out Hopkins great performances, many of them were in his 40s which is incredible. But some of his fights were truly terrible and boring.
