I'm not even a fan to be honest, but I have been aware of him since I got into boxing around 1988, just seems as if he's been around forever so to go 12 rounds with Kovalev in 2014 regardless of his performance is pretty incredible. I get where you're coming from regarding his style, it's boring as **** but I have learned to appreciate it, same as Floyd, Ward etc. If I was a pro fighter that's the style I'd prefer to adopt, who wants to get punched in the head at 50 years old by the likes of Kovalev? It just seems like people forget these guys are human and hold them to ridiculous standards.
Im just trying to be real, rather then just say something that sounds good just to say it. I appreciate Hopkins style, too, as well as Floyd, Ward, Sweet Pea, etc and other defensive master class sweet scientists. With Hopkins though, it seems that a lot of the credit he gets is simply because he was able to do so much of it in his late 30s and 40s. Im not criticizing Hopkins for running away from Kovalev, who wants to get punched in the head at 50 years old by the likes of Kovalev. I dont forget their human, what Im saying is that Hopkins had no business getting in there with Kovalev, because the real Kovalev that we know is the devastating puncher we saw vs Pascal for example, that guy would have stopped that 50 year old Hopkins and hurt him badly. As good as Hopkins was throughout his career, we got to be real. Hes had highs and lows. Had he actually been somewhat competitive vs Kovalev at 50, then that would have been different. He wasnt competitive in that fight. That wasnt the type of Hopkins performance that we respect about him. At least in the fights vs Calzaghe or Pascal or even Taylor, he was in the fight. Those were close fights. Kovalev wasnt so just because hes 50 doesnt mean he deserve a medal just for being 50. Roy Jones on the other hand gets criticized greatly for getting KOd a few times, where at least hes actually being offensive and trying to be entertaining. This is actually the reason why many people rate Hopkins ahead of RJJ. (because of the success they've had in the later stages of their career) Since 2004, sure RJJ has gotten KOd while Hopkins hasnt. But on the other hand Roy has gotten Many KO wins during that times while Hopkins hasnt had a single KO win. RJJ fights in a more fan friendly entertaining style. Hopkins is more skilled defensively. (since 2004) You cant say Hopkins has always been more skilled defensively than Roy (before 2004) because Roy couldnt be touched until he moved up to Heavyweight than back down to Light Heavy (something Hopkins never did). Hopkins was only considered better defensively than Roy after Roy started to decline 2004. Had Roy retired after being Ruiz, Roy Jones may be considered the greatest defensive fighter of all time! Just sayin!
I rate Jones over Hopkins all day long, but whatever way you want to spin it, going the distance with Kovalev at 50 is pretty amazing. But yeah Hopkins' boring style is the reason behind his longevity. As much as I love to see exciting fights though, if I had to fight for a living I'd choose that style too.
GGG toyed with murray and dropped him 3 times and stopped him Murray is impossible to stop unless your are Golovkin Groves a landed everything on him and never even dropped him and murray himself fought back
