he wasn't a prospect at all imo, just a undefeated nobody. if he had any prospects he wouldn't have taken the aj fight then never fought again. i'd struggle to call gary cornish a prospect tbh and he was a better boxer and had better record going into his aj loss.
Butler had harder sparring sessions than Leo had fights. It was a tougher era. Butler went on to give Lewis a good fight. What has Leo done since?
0-0 Butler was better than Brazeale. I'll tell ya that for free. Brazaelle simply cannot box. He is atrocious. The selection process for Bowe's opponents on the rise were better by default of Bowe being active in a much tougher HW scene.
wrong. Neither can anyone else post 1999 according to you, so arguing is pointless. The 90's being a better era can't be used as a blanket statement about EVERY licensed professional from that period being better.. The **** Bowe fought in his first 17 pro fights wouldn't have done anything in ANY period.. At least Charles Martin was a ranked man in his own time. Garing Lane wasn't..
:rofl Ancient Butler beat Fred Kassi. Brazeale got his ass handed to him by Kassi. Can you not see the weakest link? It starts as cable wire and ends at a string of twine.
Ancient Butler was a seasoned veteran taking on a 12 fight novice and barely squeaked by with a split decision that could have gone either way.. Breazeale was a 15 fight novice taking on a more seasoned Kassi, and more or less got the same result.. Were either of these robberies? I don't know.. But it doesn't change the quality of Bowe's opponents in proportion to WHEN he fought them.
While AJ has better list of wins in his early 17 fights, and thats for sure, Ridd ck Bowe had very busy schedule - ha had that 17 opponents in 14 months. Same with Mike Tyson - his early opposition was not better than Bowe's and worse than AJ. But he had that 17 fights in 10 months. So level of opposition in 17 fights 1) AJ 2) Tyson and Bowe about the same But AJ fought his 17 opponents during 32 months, compared to Bowe's 14 and Tyson's 10 months.
And he hadn't fought Hardly at all when he fought Bowe.. Joshua in his 14th pro bout beat a 6'7", 250 lb heavyweight who was 21-0.. Bowe at the same junction in his career fought the 4-5-1 Mike Robinson.. Was Robinson better too?
Arguing for Gary Cornish now? This is getting sad. Like the Ukrainian said , Bowe was beating this type of guy twice in a month low down on undercards. Joshua was headlining against Cornish like it was a championship fight. And i saw saw Cornish coming up. He fought on obscure channels called Loaded TV in halls the size of your living room. You'd see better boxers in your local gym.
Bowe was more fluid and slick, later in the fight I think he would destroy Joshua, who would be tired carrying that physique around for 10 rounds. Joshua seems like the kind of fighter that needs to get his opponent out of there in the first half of the fight, or at least hurt them so badly they are no longer a threat. I think Bowe would be far too skilful and take AJ into deep water.
You don't know why he retired though.. Could have been because AJ ruined him which says more about AJ than anything else. Could have been that Leo had other ducks lined up in another industry or a wife who didn't want him fighting anymore, or parents who owned a family business. Guys retire for all sorts of reasons. That's fine.. But my argument is sizing up Joshua's opposition to Bowe's at the same junctions in their career.. Joshua fought the 21-0 Cornish in his 14th bout.. Bowe fought the 4-5-1 Mike Robinson.. Being honest and not doing any tap dances around the issue, who was the better win?
Very true and I agree. But when you're pursuing better opposition, its not always easy to line those fights up every three weeks. You can always find tomato cans willing to take a match at the last minute. Just ask Dave Jaco. The dude would get phone calls the night before he'd have to fly to another city to fight some prospect.
But WHEN did he have them? was that prior to facing Bowe or years later which would make that argument moot.. Irrelevant for reasons already given. Now you're just talking sh-t. Lewis killed Butler, and in a fight that Lionel never should have been in to begin with.. And again this was six years after the fact, and has nothing to do with whatever value he held at the time of the Bowe fight which btw was zilch... Irrelevant. You don't know WHY he retired.. Could have been because Joshua ruined him which says something about Joshua not Leo.. Could have been because he had other life pursuits. A fighter choosing to leave the sport isn't necessarily a reflection of what his abilities were.
