Why do lower weight class fighters get so damn fat after retirement?

I've noticed that seems to happen all the time. Much more so than higher weight class fighters. And when higher weight class fighters get fat it seems they can easily lose the weight and get back down into shape rather easily. Like Mike Tyson.

But all these guys like Duran, Hatton, Gomez, Hamed, etc. blow up. I mean look at ****ing huge Naseem Hamed is right now. And I cannot understand how that happens. These guys make such a low weight how does their body just literally double in size? And fast too.

I remember a few years ago my cousin told me "Erik Morales is fat as hell". And I'm thinking, WTF? That guy is a little skinny Featherweight. And then I look him up and he's got a belly.

Years of denying themselves the food they want to make weight sees them over indulge I guess. And being smaller means they don't carry the weight as well as bigger men, 50lbs on a featherweight is clearly going to look far worse than on a 6ft 3 heavyweight who has the bigger frame to accommodate it.

You're probably right about the weight being carried differently. Even George Foreman in the 90s was fat, but didn't really look "huge". It was a different type of fat compared to Hamed.

When I see Hamed now. I think "Oh ****, that can happen too, I don't want to get like that. Oh my God that can't be healthy. He's going to die".

Its diet and exercise man. I boxed for a few years in my life, and although it was amateur, the training regiment and diet was stupid. STUPID. You're in a gym a minimum of 4-5 times a week, putting in hard worked hours. You're waking up in the morning to run......Hell, I remember the first time I ever sparred (and at this time I was playing rep hockey in winter, and soccer in summer) I thought I had the best conditioning in the world, only to be sucking air by the first round.
Boxing is on a different level from ANY other sport. I am NEVER shocked when I see these dudes blow up afterwards, as your body's metabolism (especially post 25) goes to the ****ter and you have to work for your results.
Pretty sure after a pugilistic career, concluding after sometimes 20+ years, you say "**** it, im eating all the wings, and drinking all the beers".

Many Heavyweights are already chubby while actively boxing. And even when they retire they rarely pull something like this.

Kind of like making up for lost time. Most people party their asses off until about ages 25-30. Whereas these pros are waking up at 6am to eat eggs, chicken and broccoli and then go run and have someone punch them in the belly.

Because they artificially keep their weight below its natural level by eating carefully and working out regularly. When they stop this, their weight balloons.

As humans beings get older their metabolism declines every year by 10-15%. It is insanely hard to be a 130-140 lbs fighter, you have to make so many sacrifices in diet and excercise. When they are boxing for a living they are fully motivated by the riches they can make. Once they are no longer boxing, that drive, motivation does not remain the same and naturally they will go out, enjoy life and pack on the pounds.

Very simple, bigger size means you need more energy to maintain weight. If you're short it takes less to put on weight.
