What was that 2-3 combinations per round? Cool. If I had the energy I could probably find 20-30 instances where he just throws one single power punch or crude head-hunting haymaker at a time. That includes the one that left him wide open to be tagged by Bruno (featured early in your highlight clip) and another dozen or so that missed wildly.
Nah, if there were many things Tyson lacked, a warrior chin was not one of them. If he took take almost 9 rounds of non-stop brutal punishment from Lenni (a all time great murderous puncher himself) when he was a complete ghost of the fighter he used to be, 2-3 big shots from Bruno were not going to get the job done.
His combinations were on the slide. 10-12 punch combinations had already declined to 3-4 punch combinations max by the Bruno fight. By the Williams and Douglas fight, everything was based on that one big shot.
You seem to be missing the point. Show me other (earlier) fights where he threw a higher percentage of one-punch-at-a-time power punches and haymakers without closing the distance first...
This seems to me to be the first fight where Tyson noticeably starts loading up on his punches, headhunting, and throwing one punch at a time without properly positioning himself or setting his punches up. But maybe I'm wrong...
I don't think he lost any fundamental skills over the six months or so since the Spinks fight. He probably just didn't have much respect for Bruno and got a bit lazy. He actually looked much better in the rematch, but there's little reason to believe he had improved in general during that time. Rather the opposite. He just was more focussed in the second fight. When you breeze through everyone like Tyson had done it's probably easy to think you just have to show up to get the job done.
I agree he had looked better in most fights up to that point, but when did Tyson ever regularly throw 12 punch combinations throughout a fight? That seems to be high-light reel Tyson you talk about, not a Tyson that actually existed. Tyson looks pedestrian in every round except the first and last against Thomas for example. And it's not like he was a whirlwind all the way against Tucker either. You'd think Tyson was a enlarged version of prime Pac the way he gets talked about. He never was.
Exactly, they make out as though Tyson didn't throw as many combinations just because he parted with Rooney whereas the more likely scenario is he thought he could knock everybody out with one big bomb if it landed. Tyson could be lazy so throwing single shots is easier on you than throwing combos...
