How about that kangaroo-gazelle flying thru the air left hook he unleashed? For those who are familiar with the Ellis fight, after his combos in the 4th round that gashed open Jimmy's eye, remember Floyd's flying left hook that Jimmy just ducked under? Man I wanted that baby to land flush and put Ellis into la-la land! See: Ingo 2
I don't care how big or small you were, he hits you with that you're toast!
As a fan I'm stretching but look at his record: 55-8-1
If you give the teenager Floyd the nod against Maxim (which most ringside boxing pundits did) and a 3-0 against Quarry-Quarry-Ellis which were right there for him to win and he gave away, You're looking at a 59-5. Two Liston losses, two Ali losses, and the Ingo stoppage (the Bingo DID land right on the button and he kept fighting) which he avenged with two KO wins. Not too shabby folks.
How ANYONE can attempt to evaluate his career and come out criticizing him boggles my mind.
Back to that kangaroo left hook! As Rod Serling would say: Welcome to the Twilight Zone!

jowcol, I truly believe that Floyd should have gotten the Maxim, Quarry and Ellis nods....and I say that not just as a rabid Floyd fan, but as a serious, detached, objective observer...right jowcol? Right jowcol???? jowcol??...:smoke

Floyd was quick but he tended to throw lots of hooks and leap in with punches. Ali dominated him with straight punches and keeping him on the end of his long jab.

    Present and accounted for...SIR!
Wife took me out all day Friday and then made me feel like a young man again Friday nite! :D:D
Yes, he could have gotten those decisions you mentioned but he never (dammit) wanted to throw it into high gear. :patsch IMO, in a weird way, his Ingo 2 bout was similar to Emile-Paret 3.
He never wanted to hate a fighter again but, as I said, that's why we love him so much. Look at him attempt to tend to Ingo after the 2nd fight; look at him attempt to comfort and tend to Cooper after their fight. Heck, if Floyd had ever hurt anyone seriously we could have drove him to the sanitarium right then and there.
I honestly think that NO one could KO him, regardless of size or eras.
OK, his knee was touching the canvass when the ref said ten in one of the Sonny fights, give me a break! Ignorant posters trowel out numerous threads matching Patterson against this guy or that guy and have him face down out like a light....not gonna happen.
Lastly (I may have mentioned this before) Floyd fought London here in Indy in May 59; Brian trained on the West Side in one of our beautiful parks. Floyd at the Fairgrounds where the fight was held.
My old Korean war bud was at the fight and during training.
After 2 or 3 minutes on the speed bag, during training, my bud said a janitor at the facility sat down and said: "OH MY GOD, LORD HAVE MERCY!"
    Those hands!
Be nice to meet you some day Red, where do you hail from?

Floyd's in-the-ring class was never more evident than in that 2nd Johansson bout...remember that cheap shot from Ingo in that first bout? The behind the head shot on an addled Patterson just after rising from that initial right hand bomb?? Don't know how many times that round was played, over and over and over on tv and in theaters...God knows how many times Floyd forced himself to see himself being hit from behind in that third round...ya think that maybe a foul should have been called by the ref?? At least a little time called maybe,...perhaps even, in the very least, a warning to the Swede in addition to time being called? Arising from that first bomb was proof enough that Floyd's chin was painfully underrated, but...receiving that behind the head bomb...a blatant foul, and arising from that as well as 5 more trips to the deck, I mean, damn...what what do Floyd's detractors want anyway????...Nevertheless, Floyd displayed real class as well as cool headed sportsmanship in the 5th round of the rematch when, as an addled Johansson, this time, after rising from the 5th round knockdown, had his back turned to the ever surging Patterson, and instead of teeing off on the back of Ingo's head, Floyd spun him around before administering that monstrous coup de grace of a left hook. I've been meaning for years to point this out on a boxing forum....
Yes, there's but ONE Floyd, and it sure ain't Mayweather.
Yes jowcol, I'd like to meet you too...I think I could talk with you for hours bud,...and I live in beautiful (sarc.) Jacksonville Florida////maybe this can be arranged sometimes my man!

Did you do the one with the Moby soundtrack? If so, it was very good and a perfect choice of music for Floyd!

Jowcol, have you read the W.K. Stratton biography of Floyd, and if so would you recommend it?

Just have to say that I agree with every post submitted in this one. Floyd, easily my all - time favourite. When he was active, I used to rail against any adverse comments on him in the papers. Usual tired stuff, jaw etc. One of my standard responses was the balance aspect tied in with his attacking style. Added to the fact that huge punchers like Ingo and Sonny couldn't KNOCK him out, despite being at their mercy. Anyway ingrained views can't be changed usually. At least many of us on here appreciate how great he was. Eventually was lucky enough to spend time with him and he was as charming as you would expect.
