Maybe you're right. I guess time will tell. Personally I would've prefered they fought a different opponent and brought someone like Chilemba in for sparring to help him prepare for Ward. Kept him in camp from start to finish as well. I think Ward is going to be feeling a lot more confident after tonight's fight and Kovalev less so. :good
I could definitely see an argument for that strategy. Heck, I'd still be all for them bringing in Chilemba for the camp
People are overreating in my opinion. Issac Chilemba is a 29 year old world class LightHeavyweight. And is probably the 3rd or 4th best LHW in the world in a stacked division. He's not a pushover and Kovalev won the fight. It's a good name on Kovalev's resume.
It's not about how many times he's been ko's, it's the fact he's been shaken and wobbled by dumpster truck men.
Kovalev having trouble with Chilemba doesn't make Chilemba awkward. I don't get that. It's like an excuse to explain Kovalev's trouble. Chilemba is straight up and down, not slick, uses a high guard, and controls distance. Chilemba's footwork gave Kovalev trouble. That doesn't make Chilemba awkward though. Why not just say Kovalev has trouble when he can't control the distance?
The guy lost to TONY BELLEW. He is probably more accomplished than the other prospects right now, but no way near as good. But yes, you're right, he is no pushover and it's a reasonably decent name.
I completely missed this fight, but I can't say I'm surprised by the fight. Chilemba has always been a tricky fighter. He's defensively sound and has troubled everyone he's been in the ring with. Kovalev needed this fight. It's the best preparation he can get before fighting Ward. This is the type of opponent he needed to get prepared for the big fight. He got the victory and now it's time to fix any bad habits he may have for the showdown.
So has Kovalev. In fact, I think Kovalev's chin is shakier than Ward's. Didn't Kovalev get knocked out cold with head gear on?
