Exactly. Hopkins did that a lot of times. And the welters he dragged up were smaller than Brook.

I don't like people moving up 2 weight classes, never have and likely never will.

I disagree with the notion that he is dragging up WW's himself; he was trying to fight a 160 guy and that fell through, the same promoter (who has no one else at mw to really offer) then offered someone else and he took it. With 9 weeks notice, you'll struggle to get a decent fighter in. Given the choice between Brook and a Dom Wade, who would you rather? The fight doesn't get a pass from me, I don't like it at all. To scurtinise you need to do so with context however.

 

As others have pointed out, guys like DLH and Tito were more proven than Brook, especially at higher weights.

Hopkins also fought good opposition too.

 

If memory serves me well I'd say Floyd and Canelo got a lot of flack for bringing up the smaller guys! Hopkins not so much because Tito had already fought at 160 and ODH was a catch weight! Similar but different in a way!

 

Hopkins welters had campaigned at MW before he fought them.


Its like trying to argue that fighting Hopkins himself at LHW was facing a blown up MW, so anyone who faced him at LHW was cowardzaghish.

 

You can say that Tito and DLH had success north of 147 (particularly 154) all you want.

But that does not change the fact that they are natural Welterweights. They are both 5'11"ish tall, lanky guys optimally suited for the 147 pound division where their slender frames are not at a disadvantage against bigger Middleweight fighters.

It's clear as day that p4p Tito and DLH are better fighters at 147 pounds. At the least just admit that despite their success at the higher weights they were still blown up Welterweights.

When Hopkins was a MW champ he didnt go up and fight bigger fighters in higher divisions. He decided against facing Calzaghe and didnt fight Jones or Toney which would have been above MW.
Hopkins didnt contest world titles at a higher weight until after he had lost his title and Hopkins turned pro inside the CW limit.

On the subject, Im not a fan of a MW champ facing a WW. Hopkins fought a few former WWs and mentioned some others as potential opponents.
I would prefer to see Golovkin against a decent MW, but it does appear that alot of other MWs have little interest in facing Golovkin.
