Do you think Duran knew he was going to get blown up by Hearns?

I have a hard time figuring that one out also. He faced Hearns instead of his mandatory McCallum and was stripped of his belt for that reason. So he's motivated enough to drop his title but not enough to actually train?

 

I think after the first round certainly when things got too hot for him

 

To answer the thread, I don't think Duran thought he was going to get blown up by anyone. He probably had a healthy amount of respect for Hearns, but had ego enough to believe he could do whatever Leonard (or anyone else remotely his size) had done. Even when past 30 and over his best weight.

But on the other hand he was no idiot. He knew Hearns was among the very best out there and that a win over him would mean a huge boost for his career - and quite probably a lucrative rematch with Hagler.

 

According to Hands of Stone, he was partied the f*ck out for that fight. My copy of the book got waterlogged. Maybe someone else can look it up. Either way, that's his fault, his lack of professionalism. But he had been in the game for 17 years by that point. His dedication was wavering at best.

Had Duran fought the version of Hearns who was already struggling to make 147 instead of rematching Leonard, he might well have worn Tommy down, especially over 15 rounds.

It was after all only 10 months later that Tommy had his last fight at 147 and never attempted to make that weight again.

 

This is also correct. Steward noticed that Duran could never look Tommy square in the eye.

 

I have to admit I am struggling to see how the 5' 6" Duran with a 66" reach is remotely similar to the 5' 10" Leonard who had a 74" reach.:huh

147 Duran clings to Hearns and doesn't give him no space to box. He tried to out box Hearns at 154 which was a critical error.

He was relentless in Montreal. The foot speed , the upper body movement , the hand speed. he got in on you fast and thats the last guy you want in your chest. 147 Hearns would have hell with that.

 

Is it a full moon? Are the planets aligned? We are in complete agreement.

 

Duran probably asked Mike Quarry (ala Bob Foster fight) of what strategy to use against a much taller fighter with explosive power (Hearns).

 

I heard the same and Duran looked like he would have preferred to have been anywhere else prior to the fight. Durant seem to have the premonition that he was about to be Cuevas'ed.

 

So he had an excuse for the most devastating loss of his career? I'd actually be far more surprised if he hadn't.

 

He lacked a bit of experience and did learn a lot from the SRL fight but he was still an offensive marvel at 147. He blew away Cuevas in just as impressive fashion and people who truly lived and breathed boxing at the time will remember how feared and revered Cuevas was.

I would 110% agree he was at his finest at 154, he filled out a bit, had the experience of the SRL loss and was extremely confident.

Personally i don't think Duran could beat Hearns at any weight from 147 up. You could see the trepidation all over Duran from the pre fight all the way through to the devastating conclusion.
