    Lots of things.

Earlier on it was his defence, later on his business skills enabled him to look even greater.

We assume you mean Mayweather so I would suggest you clarify; as a tribute to the sport and as a human being, Mayweather couldn't carry Patterson's jock strap!
Why was he so special? Great talent, undefeated, although you could question his resume against some of the 'Greats'. Lastly, never seemed to have the Big fight against another obvious fantastic fighter until it suited his schedule along with the fact that he has ripped off boxing fans the last several years, relying on his defensive skills to cop his win in several snooze fests after fans paid hard earned bucks to go see this display. I called the PacMan fight perfectly. He comes out in defensive, counterpunching mode, builds a decent lead, takes no chances, is stunned a couple of times, slides away, and gets a decision with all the PacMan supporters clamoring for a rematch....typical Pro Boxing in this century. So yes, that's why he's special.

His reflexes. When everyone else was battering the pads. Floyd was working them for up to 2 hours a day working on his reflexes. Slow his reflexes down and he losses some of them fights. The mayweathers for as stupid as they come across at times know what their doing with boxing.

He was training himself since he was a young kid and was doted with awesome talent combine that with training and you have a winner, later he learned the rough things of boxing and adapted to them.

He had to adapt due to hand problems.

He didn't always train like that.

That true brixton? Knew he had hand problems just assumed he always trained like that tho.

A lot of people ridiculed the pad workout specifically remember hatton mocking it prior to their fight. Others thought it was just for show for the cameras. Personally put it down to a good bit of floyds success. Would be interested to know when they started incorporating it into the training regime.

Floyds reflexes were razor sharp. Actually think people struggled with him due to the reflexes. He would throw punches on auto pilot a lot of the time. Eradicated that tenth of a second where boxers need to think about the punches. Put a lot of that down to the pad workouts.

What made him special? Hmmm. What made him SEEM special was very creative matchmaking to avoid stiff competition.

that was part of what kept him undefeated, but regardless of matchmaking, he was a special talent.
