I think Witherspoon is among the best 20 heavyweights of all time ( when in shape and focused ) with an all-around type of game, however, he really wasn't big or dominant in any phase of the game to beat Vitali, who would likely out throw and outland him. Its a shame Witherspoon was blackballed by Don King and never had a chance to face Mike Tyson in the mid to late 1980's. I think he was better than Bruno or Douglas Vitali via UD.
Good post! I tend to agree and 'Spoon was one of my favorites though it seemed like he never put it all together. I think he could win, but I fear he would struggle with the jab/size of Klitschko. It's funny that I always thought he might be the one to give Tyson fits (touch, good chin - notwithstanding the anomaly in the second Bonecrusher fight - decent punch, experienced, and not to be bullied). Wake up. There are very few 210 pounds guys ranked today. How about none. Under 220? Probably zero as well. Size matters. I'm a fan of 'Spoon. I don't think Witherspoon was too small, but when you match him vs Vitali, he is. You might find it to be an inconvenient truth, but boxing at its essence is hitting without being hit. When you 6'8" tall, have long arms, are mobile, fight smart, and hit hard, you have a tremendous advantage in this department. Smaller heavies are bringing a dagger to a sword fight. The need to have the chin and heart to get inside, and in-fighting skills with some power. How many smaller guys have all four assets? Very few. Better yet, take all the decision fights of Bowe, Klitschko, Lewis, and Klitschko, and omit the ones when they were fighting men over 240 pounds. How many decisions did this group lose? Try one, and it was somewhat controversial.
I like this answer, and I might even make Spoon a closer dog, say something as close as 51/49. In tip top shape Spoon would be hell for the best of em.
Witherspoon would nullify the jab and get inside, where he wold work the body. He could also land right hands off the Klitchko jab. Klitchko could take punishment well. This one will go into the late rounds. Both guys will wrestle and grab in the championship rounds. Tim by close decision.
Prime Witherspoon had all that BTW he was about 220 lbs when in proper shape. He wasn't all tht small.
Spoon was at his best shape at 213-215, he was not wide of shoulders or thorax he was soft and overweight at 220
