This is a good match up. The record has it Tubbs barely losing to the prime Riddle Bowe..but then..destroyed w/title on the line vs Tyson. Tua was a lot like Mtyson. But, Tubbs could win! ^ ^ Vs Lewis don't forget..he had a hurt shoulder!
I agree with the first part of this reply, I'm not sure I completely agree with the "he would embarrass Tua" part. Or the journeyman part. But like you pointed out in your post referencing the Rahman and Wooden fights, Boxers who mostly played it safe were kryptonite to Tua. Now Rahamn got tagged in fight 1 and Tua got the stoppage. His fights vs Maskaev and Izon showed his ability to come from behind and get the stoppage which says a lot about his desire and will to win.. I can't get out of my head the absolute whitewashing that Lennox gave him though, or the loss to Byrd, The blueprint those guys laid if Tubbs follows it it will see him to victory.. But don't kid yourself though Tua could END the fight with one punch at any time however a very sharp Tony is not an easy target and I think he'd be slick enough to capture a UD
I didn't. I read about it decades ago and from memory it didn't sound as though he made a great impression that night. If it's not televised as you say then I guess it can't be viewed. But get floored and held on close scored against a man like Mike Jameson isn't much better than looking lackluster against Jeff Wooden. That's my whole point.
I think it's pretty obvious that Tubbs would win unless he got knocked out. If they peaked in the same era, the fight would be heavily influenced by how much each trained and I think Tubbs was more inconsistent in that respect.
Also, it occurred after Tubbs lost the title - he only fought a couple of times between Jan. 86 when he lost to Witherspoon and March 88 when he lost to Tyson. The Jameson fight was a keep busy fight to get some rust off. Anyway when I think "Prime slick Tubbs" I think of the 225-230 lb version that easily beat Bonecrusher and Page. Maybe Tubbs doesn't win 10 out of 10 times but he doesn't have to pick him here. Tubbs by UD.
I never said he would beat him "10 out of 10" I am making an educated guess based on what I feel would most likely happen if they fought once prime v. prime. That's all we can do in a thread such as this. Chill the f out.
The title of the thread is 'prime version'. Tubbs may not have always been prime but we're being asked what would happen if that best version showed up. It's not rocket science. Saad 54, like most other posters who read the thread title in full, picks that version of Tubbs. I think someone owes someone an apology.
I'm still trying to ascertain which version was " prime slick Tubbs." The man always had fast hands and decent skills. But he was never really in ideal shape and from the sound of some of the comments made about him over the years, you'd think he was Muhammad Ali... I'm guessing this prime period of his was the one where he out boxed a 14-2 smith and a decling Greg Page who was starting to see losses against guys like David Bey... David tua sparked John Ruiz in about 20 seconds and handed him one of only two stoppage loses in his career. He easily dispatched Daroll Wilson right after Wilson beat undefeated Shannon Briggs. He came from being to beat an undefeated prime Rahman.. And he was never stopped in his life... Tony Tubbs has become overrated.. David tua has become underrated..
