Tony Tucker v Jim Jeffries 15rds?

I watched the fight a couple years ago and thought it was relatively even. Tucker had a decent start (was getting the best of the jabbing duel), then Buster started edging out the rounds, then Tucker came on gradually in the final few rounds as Buser faded. Buster seemed to wear down down the stretch before he was actually hurt by that punch, imo.

 

That outcome works for me. Mike Tyson fought Tucker when tony had an injured hand and Lewis fought him when he was 35 years old. Despite Tucker being at a disadvantage in both these fights, neither man could knock him out, so I don't think Jeffries is either. If it goes the distance, Tony is going to have height, reach, speed and better boxing skills.

 

I think he wore down both mentally and physically. He gave up really fast after fighting very very well. In hindsight he had no chance of getting to the finish line, there was loads of time to go.

LOL at you again. Maybe I should dig up what Matt Mcgrain said about Johnson avoiding the best a while back. He buried you. Johnson simply had no real interest and kept making excuses. The fights could have happened in many nations

As for Johnson's personal reply, who cares. He's not very honest, even his own manager said so. Of course you'll believe him.

Mattdonnellon gave rankings during Johnson years as Champion. He didn't even fight a top 4 ranked man as an active champion from 1909-1915. Well he did have 4 round ex-match vs Gunboat Smith, who knocked him out.

Tony would outbox Jim, he never really developed as a fighter to have strong punching power.

 

Tucker never impressed me and he never was able to rise to the top to be hwt champion. Jeffries impressed a generation enough to know him as a leading ATG. The best Jeffries was an animal...trained to fight 15-20 rounds easily, strong, powerful, tough as they come. Sometime after round ten Jeffries ends the fight.

 

Jeffries impressed a generation that was easily impressed by beating saw-offed Pier 6 brawlers and old men. It was an era of charming naivete in respect to sports.

Tucker hails from the Golden Age of the American Athlete, an era reigned over by Titans of Strength and Prowess. Names like Page, Douglas, Tyson, Tubbs, Thomas, Smith... Any of these would have been seen as aliens in Jeffries' era, individuals so far above the norm in every physical attribute as simply to be unprecedented.

 

It's good to see the majority of people post boxing here. Jeffries total fights are unknown. Articles say he whipped 20 men prior to Fitzsimmons, but the total amount of fights really isn't the best way to judge a fighter, the quality of opposition and how he beat them is.

Who is Tucker's best win? Buster Douglas gets my vote. Douglas was comfortably in the lead but got caught lately. His other best wins are split decision vs Norris and McCall.

As stated the best power punchers and aggressive fighters beat Tucker who l think at times lacked fire.

I researched Jeffries Vs. Armstrong and he did floor him. I posted the report a while back when a certain someone was asking for proof.

Jeffries who did not wear hand wraps most of the time broke his thumb early in the match and had another 10 round match scheduled on the same day. It was a promotion two fight in one day sort of thing. The circumstances of two fights in the same day and the injury had something to do with the performance I think.

Tony Tucker stunned James "Buster" Douglas with a right hand early in the 10th round, then finished him off with a flurry of punches Saturday to win the International Boxing Federation heavyweight title.
The bout was part of the undercard for the Mike Tyson-Pinklon Thomas fight. Tyson was defending his World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association heavyweight titles.

Tucker will fight the winner of the Tyson-Thomas bout Aug. 1.

The punch knocked Douglas into the ropes. Tucker was on Douglas quickly, hammering him with a series of punches that moved him across the ring.

Douglas (23-4-1) was unable to defend himself against the onslaught, and referee Mills Lane moved in to stop the fight at 1:36 as Tucker (35-0 with 30 knockouts) kept flailing punches to Douglas' head.

Johnson signed to fight Langford too and pulled out of a signed contract.

He had no intention of fighting Joe Jeanette with his title on the line, and could have made the fight outside the USA, perhaps in France where the two were active at one point.
