And on his way to getting caught?

I remember watching this fight and thinking Vitali had squandered his early momentum by not committing to anything more than his jab...and besides the freak cut, I think Lennox's punches were adding up on Vitali

I agree with Lennox's post fight annalysis that he was "getting his second wind" and was a round or two away from wrapping Vitali in a coc00n of horror

They both were fading. I think Lewis had a little bit less left in the tank.

I wouldn’t say fading quickly, but Lewis was asserting himself increasingly.

I think that it was always going to end in some kind of cuts stoppage, whatever officiating decisions had been taken.

I'm not sure about Lewis getting a second wind or not but he certainly won the last round convincingly. I don't think Vitali would have lasted much longer had it continued. But given the damage to his eye it was a good stoppage. Could have even been stopped earlier.

There's no way to know how it would have played out.

But that was a hellish cut.

I would agree. The tide was turning in the 5th and decidedly so in the 6th.
Whilst both were fading, Lewis was still able to land the meaningful punches. Vitali's punches had lost any kind of snap and were no longer a deterrent, whenever Lewis mustered the energy for an attack.

    Well, both were spent.

Lewis came out for like 30 sec at the beginning of the last two rounds, shot his wad and then it became a sloppy wrestling mauling match.

Pure energy without the nasty cuts, VK seemed to have a little more in the tank and the way Lewis crashed on the stool between rounds it was obvious that he put everything on the table to AVOID going the distance.

Lewis was never a conditioning monster or a late fight/round energy bunny .

The cuts made all the difference because VK could not see most of the incoming and was for all practical purposes blind on one side. That was a legit TKO for Lemmie.

Without the cuts I think Lewis would have simply collapsed a couple of rounds later, IMO he was out fuel beyond the reserve.

prime vitali was unable to defend himself against worst ever lewis, and was also in kamikaze all out attack, he was logically going to fade faster with all the damage accumulating and the gass he was using up.

Vitali had thrown everything he had into the opening rounds trying to catch Lewis cold and stop him early. Suffering those terrible cuts only served to increase his desperation to end things before the later rounds and he upped the workrate as best he could.

Lewis took everything Vitali had to give and as the fight progressed was landing the bigger, cleaner and more effective shots, and by the sixth round he was the more active and agressive fighter, and the one looking to push forward and engage - Vitali spent most of the sixth round clinching.

So yes, I do agree that Vitali was fading quick against Lennox. He shot his bolt early and exhausted himself trying and failing to knock Lewis out then trying and failing to avoid being stopped.

Vitali was still 4-2 on all three cards, just a reminder, and the cut was opened by blatant cheating that the worst referee in hw history let Lewis away with.

It didn't help that Vitali took the fight on 2 weeks notice...

Guys, a stoppage on cuts is as absolute as any other.

It really doesn’t matter who was ahead, or how you think the fight might have gone otherwise.

The only question that matters is whether the doctor was justified in stopping the fight.

I think on balance that he was, whether you happen to agree with his choice or not.
