Greb wasn't known for it until after he lost sight in one eye. He had no depth perception and needed to be close to operate... and a couple hundred fights in, he was "seasoned" in the nuances of the ring, past his prime and doing what it took to hang on. Marciano is another one who won at all costs... and by all methods.
After seeing footage of the second bout between Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey recently, I couldn't believe how much Dempsey was resorting to rabbit punches and trying to head-butt. Roy Francis was the ref in the Ribalta and Coetzer fights.the Ribalta didn't go long enough to talk about! Bruno was warned 3 times for hitting and holding in the Coetzer fight, twice for elbowing , once for shouldering and once for use of the head.Undeniably he fought a rough fight and should have had a point deducted for holding and hitting but the taller Coetzer contributed to where the punches landed because he ducked his head when in close so Bruno's right hand punches often went around the back of his head. It was a mauling ,clubbing fight and Coetzer put up a game effort ,whereas a ring rusty Bruno was unnecessarily rough inside where he tended to smother his own work. Bruno held and hit a few punches in the initial round in the Ferguson fight, but Ferguson basically did not want to know.The ref was John Coyle.
I think it was trainer George Francis who developed the foul tactics that Frank Bruno had success with. Bruno simply didn't have the boxing smarts to utilize his talents properly, so he was instructed to do plenty of holding and hitting and rabbit punching when in close to maximize the damage to his opponents.
