The laws of physics do not apply to Rocky Marciano, nor logic to his fans ,because ,"he would find a way to win." .atsch
There is no quit in a lot of outgunned fighters. Thankfully, a merciful referee or a corner that actually cares about their charge is there to stop the massacre.
There is one factor that decides the winner in this match up....Heart. Liston had none and Marciano had all of it. The only way to stop Marciano would be to literally beat him until he is knocked out unconscious. There is no stopping him in his corner or slowing him down. We saw Marciano down twice in his career. Once in the opening against perhaps the trickiest/craftiest fighter of all time who knocked down/out plenty of great fighters and another time at the very end of his career when he was 32 years old fighting an ATG fighter with the most knockouts in the history of boxing. Liston isn't that much bigger than Marciano. Sure he had a lot of weight on him but not a lot of height. He was the same height as Walcott. Liston and Marciano have the tools to beat each other but heart is the only factor that really stands out and is a game changer. Marciano could get very rough and loved it. Would Liston give up when Marciano lands bombs? After all Liston didn't have that much of defense in fact his offense was his defense. 50/50 fight
How does a guy who fights 5 rounds with a broken jaw have no heart? Nothing speaks of a lack of ring experience like making such a contention.
A slow, sloppy attrition fighter with a t-rex reach against a juggernaut with an 84'' wingspan, 30 pounds heavier than him, much stronger with dynamite in his gloves? Suuuuuuure..... Look up Frazier vs Foreman for reference.
this is rocky we are talking about, people underrate his skills. but I think liston edges him out if hes not stopped. He wont stop Rocky for sure.
By quitting on his stool when the going got rough. His fight with Marshall was the only time Liston should the least bit of heart. Don't make it out like Liston was a guy who would go through hell to win a fight.
Liston was fighting at an age at which Marciano had already QUIT the sport after a very short career with a very short run at the top. Who is the real quitter here?
Rocky was a superbly conditioned fighter, extremely strong for 185 pounds and extremely hard hitting for 185 pounds ... he was very bright, super determined and gave his all every fight .. no doubt he benefitted from fighting against a perfect storm of old names, still good but no longer great ..he waa white, ethnic, retired undefeated and is an icon to generations .. he was also made to order for Liston, much bigger, stronger, harder hitting and in possession of a huge reach advantage and the jab and style to maximize it .. I see this like Hagler vs Minter ..
You mean the shop worn Frazier who left everything he had in the FOTC in 1971...and was never the same again?...
Sorry but this is illogical. Marciano beat any and everybody that came...twice. Lastarza drew with Marciano according to the judges so Marciano wrecks him in the rematch, Marciano loses most of the rounds until the knockout of Walcott in the first fight what does he do? knocks him out in the first round of the rematch, has a war with Charles who takes him further than nearly anyone in his career so Marciano proverbially slaughters him in the rematch. A fighter has to dig VERY deep in order to make the kind of comeback that Marciano did against Walcott. That takes nothing but the utmost heart. Unfortunately we didn't get to see that from Liston.
Sounds like you are basing your entire view on one fight. You don't get to Sonny Lston's level in boxing without having to have dug deep. Boxing is an uncompromising sport and guys like Liston went all the way from their first hit on the bag to World Champ. That takes guts. One can't penalise Liston for beating many of his opponents in dominant fashion. If someone goes life and death with Floyd Patterson, being behind on points and busted up but then pulls out the one punch ko does that make them a more proven fighter than Liston who decimated him? Rocky is a fantastic fighter on so many levels but he's a bit undergunned in this one.
Yeah Marciano was an ancient 32 when he fought Archie Moore.Remind us again how old Archie was? The underlined actually fits Marciano for more aptly than Liston.
