In the wake of another Liston v Marciano thread I thought I would match up the best of Marciano's opposition as they were when they fought Rocky and pit them against a prime Sonny. So we have : Joe Louis 37 Archie Moore 38 according to him ,40 according to his Mother Joe Walcott 37/38 x2 Ezzard Charles 32/33 x2 Roland Lastarzax2 Don ****ell How does Sonny do against them?
Honestly I think Liston beats them all and in fairly short order.. Especially the renditions of those men that we're talking about.
Liston is a guy who should have been better than Marciano on paper, but in the end wasn’t for whatever reason. Marciano had a better list of opponents (I am taking Ali out of the equation), and he somehow walked away with tidier results against them. Now Liston could theoretically go 49-0 against Marciano’s opposition, but I do not take it for granted that he would. He might drop a fight early in his career as he did against Marty Marshal, or he might lose the plot after he gained possession of the title, and end up losing it to somebody he shouldn’t.
I never really count Walcott out for any fighter. He was too tricky, unorthodox, and smart as a fighter. He had potential to be the greatest heavyweight of all time imo if he was handled better.
The question is how does Sonny do against the Marciano opponents I named? I don't take it for granted that Marciano beats all Liston's early opposition and many believe he didn't beat all his own ,the first Lowry and Lastarza fights were bitterly disputed.
Talk all you want..."woulda...coulda..shoulda". Marciano had the **** beat out of him by JJW in the title fight in 1952...knocked down...cut...blinded for 3 or 4 rounds...comes back and wins the title with the best right hand ever thrown!! Second fight with Charles in Sept.1954...has his nose split open down to the bone! They beg the Dr. and the ref not to stop the fight. The Rock could have
QUIT while sitting on his stool. He chose to soldier on...KO's Charles and keeps the title. We know what Sonny did as champ...KO's "china chinned" Floyd Patterson in their rematch in 1963...and quits on his stool In Feb. 1964 in Miami...and then the farce up in Maine in 1965. Marciano had the will and the mental toughness that Liston didn't have.
How about you answer my simple question from the other thread, instead of running away....i will ask again.... Do you make ANYONE favourite over Marciano? Dempsy? Louis? Ali? Holmes? Foreman? Tyson? Lewis?
