Looking at the rankings who could you pick to do it? Doug Jones, Ernie Terrell, Karl Mildenberger, Thad Spencer are the only real notable names until 67. I don't see any of those beating him at all. Maybe Jones had a shot if he really was about to self destruct. By 67 there's Frazier and Quarry knocking about and one of them probably does the job as by then he's in his late 70's so ripe for the picking.
Marciano was stylistically made for everyone he fought. An uncoordinated slow 5'10" 185 lbr. Liston didn't quit on his stool due to a broken jaw, nose, or a closed eye but he did quit because of a shoulder injury. At the top level like this Marciano is an unrelenting force. Look at the guys who put Marciano down. They were tricky fighters who caught him with a punch he didn't see coming. Liston wasn't a tricky fighter in any way. Marciano could take a punch as well as give a hell of a punch in return. How much can Liston take?
Liston wins this fight at range and inside he is bigger stronger ,heavier and matches Marciano for power. He took Williams best shots, I'd say Williams hit harder than Walcott or Moore.DeJohn too. How much can Rocky take ?Which all time 200lbs plus puncher did Marciano ever beat?
But there really wasn't anything tricky about the way Walcott battered and floored Marciano in their fight. This wasn't "matador" Walcott, this was "I'm going to run over this little slow, sloppy palooka and get rid of him early" Walcott. Walked Marciano down and nailed him with power punches while they stood toe to toe. I don't see why Liston couldn't have done the same.
I disagree. Walcott was making Marciano miss all night. Walcott's plan it seems was to slip, counter, and hug. Marciano was smaller so he had to adjust. I don't see why we have to use Marciano's worst performance and compare it to Liston's. These guys are both Prime for Prime at there best right?
If you put a gun to my head, I would say that he would have turned up with a hangover against a motivated Ernie Terrell, and that would have been a liberty too far. Then again, Douglas is probably the last person I would have picked, to bring the consequences home to Tyson. All kind of things could have happened.
I didn't say anything about what Walcott did all night; I spoke of the first round knock down: Do you disagree? If so, how?
Its a list of large heavyweights that with the exception of McMurray were rated at one time or another.
The knockdown happened because he caught Marciano like he did Louis. The method was slip, counter, and hug which set up the knockdown.
I'd favor Liston on size alone, plus he feasted on smaller and lighter fighters, LHWs and CWs mostly... But Marciano was a good fighter who used his punches better, it would be a good s**** while it lasts... Liston's jab is massively overrated, slow telegraphed shot, his left hook was his best punch in my opinion...
