Are Hagler's title challengers underrated?

:goodI know Obel was a connected guy that got some title shots that may have been political. But he was good enough to win a 168 pound strap against a solid belt holder in Park.

other than Caveman Lee, yes otherwise, SRL would have taken the fight in 1982 and Thomas Hearns would not have lasted a mere 3 rds.

Hamsho easily defeated the so called "elite" Wilfred Benitez and had him cringing like a coward backed in a corner for 12 rds., the UD decision just a formality

I was likewise impressed by Sibson's demolition of Minter & Collins who, believe it or not, was favored to beat Sibbo!

So it goes to show that Marv's comp was underrated by know nothing press writers. These columnists just dont know what they're looking at and so spout ignorance followed by more ignorant statements repeated down the echo chamber by their readers, many of whom we have here; Magoo, Perry, etc

As I remember the bout, it was an 8-round, one-sided beatdown of a guy who'd allegedly been jobbed by the decision, in his last encounter with Minter. Antuofermo didn't land one significant punch and I don't think it was stopped merely on account of an overwhelming Minter Jab.

Well, with Leonard there was no rematch, so we'll never know.

But taken the problems he had with smaller, past prime slicksters like Duran and Leonard (when he himself was faded tbf), it really is a question how he'd do with the slick and fully fledged MWs that followed him.

Hearns might be considered quite slick among them if Hagler hadn't bulldozed him from the opening bell and turned it into a vicious brawl.

Hearns was more than happy to slug it out. Very few could but if you could get past his jab and right hand often enough he was no-where near as slick as Nunn, Toney and co. Up in the weights brawlers gave him the most trouble.

Hi Clinton...I actually went to this fight; Minter wasn't just jabbing Vito to death, he was beating him up. Vito was badly wobbled in the first round. Like Minter himself, with Vito a cuts stoppage would nearly always come before a kayo, both their chins were better than their faces.

Regarding Vito, his 15th round tko loss to Hope was at 154 and Vito did not box at 154 again; making the weight almost certainly contributed to this loss.

Imo both Alan & Vito were never the same after Hagler had finished with them.

I absolutely believe that Minter looked at his & Marvin's respective performances against Vito & believed he would beat Marvin convincingly.

Toney wasn't anywhere near as slick as he's made out to be either.
He was hit plenty by Nunn, Johnson and of course Tiberi.
He had a better chin than Hearns though.

Yes, Hearns was happy to slug it out with MMH; he was in full Hitman mode. I remember the build-up to the fight and in particular an interview with Hearns when he stated "The Hitman is back, the Motor City Cobra is no longer with us".

It appeared to me at the time that Hearns' ko of Duran (after Duran had previously been 15 with MMH) led Tommy to believe that MMH would not be able to stand up to Tommy's power...he was wrong.

Hearns was happy in dreamland when Hagler had finished with him.

He was a lot slicker than Hearns was when pressured inside and had a fantastic chin. Nunn could land plenty against anyone.
