do you still consider Calzaghe vs Lacy an upset?

Cowardzaghe was a decent short term major titlist, Lacy never was.
although ironically lacy made way more major title defences than cowardzaghe, who always ran off back to hiding behind wassens wbo title easy defences.

The fight started as pretty much even money the pair. NOT a huge upset.

    You're correct.
But the shock was how it ended up looking like a grotesque mismatch.
Horribly one-sided, for every second of every one of the 12 rounds.

There were those who did the stylistic maths, and picked Calzaghe, but you have to put it into perspective. Lacy was heavily hyped at the time, and the papers inevitably compared their results against common opponents, which favoured Lacy. There were those at the time who argued that Calzaghe was a manufactured fighter, who had never beaten anybody. It was easy to think that he could get exposed when he stepped up. Perceptions of Calzaghe changed very quickly after this fight, as did perceptions of Lacy. Not long after, Calzaghe was a two division Ring Magazine Champion, and high on their pound for pound list. There were sports writers saying that he should be knighted. It might not have been an upset, but for sure it was a turning point!

Oh absolutely! Felt legitimate sympathy from round 8 for the bravery of Lacy, mixed with hatred for his inhumane corner. The one-sided beating was shocking, the winner could have been predicted by a massive number of fans and writers pre-fight.

Contrary to some previous posts Calzaghe was not pretty much unknown in the UK, he was actually quite well known for a boxer particularly after he beat Chris Eubank. I appreciate he may not have been very high profile outside these shores. The Lacy fight was shown live on network TV here which it would not have been if Calzaghe did not have name value.

He was certainly not written off against Lacy but the general concensus was that it would be a tough fight. I don't think the result was such an upset as the manner of Lacy's defeat. I don't think I have seen such a highly rated contender so outclassed in a title fight.

Prior to this Calzaghe's management had always matched him cautiously so maybe they knew something. In any event Lacy was never the same fighter afterwards.

As you say no one knew that Joe could prove hhimself against a top 3 fighter and it was quite a shock the way he dominated one.

this only underlines the paucity of jeffs ability.

All he had was a left hook, when that was slightly reduced in power, he had nothing.

joe beat a guy with only one good move, absolutely appalling.

    thanks mate

HerolGee, we been over this before. Lacy was ruined by Joe. He never was the same. Lacy was the new Roy Jones, mini Mike Tyson. That night no one in the history of Boxing under heavyweight could beat Calzaghe.

nobody knew at the time that lacy was an uneducated baboon. calzaghe exposed that, full stop, immediately.
