UFC really is making inroads now. I always shrug off the notion that they were stealing boxing fans or marginalizing it to any appreciable degree but things really are starting to chance.
naah, the fifties didnt have boxing taking up 1/4 the airwaves on saturday nights, or boxers selling me everything from razors to flea collars, or boxers appearing regularly on every popular sitcom.
yes, and it will be getting said 10 years from now, because there will always be people who talk just to talk. you got to look at the evidence and make up your own mind.
It will i think. I do feel though without McGregors, Lesnars, Rondas,.... the popularity will deplete. They need the circus act types from WWE imo. If The Rock went into UFC years ago and was doing well i think the rise would have been quicker.
That's pretty much exactly what a description of boxing in the fifties would entail. Back then boxing was shown on Wednesday Night Fights on one of three channels, got tens of millions of viewers, and was sponsored by Gillette shaving razors and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Ray Robinson was on the Jackie Gleeson show, Car 54 Where Are You?, What's My Line?, The Ed Sullivan show, The Steve Allen Plymouth Show, etc.
there were 6 million tv sets in 1950, no world wide ppv. there were more than 200 million tvs in late 80's, and the ability to broadcast instantly, worldwide. the amount of people being reached is not even comparable.
I watched the fight, it was entertaining but I still see MMA as a glorified toughman contest. Both guys are ****ty boxers, they're not athletes, they're just tough brawlers that can grapple. An elite boxer has been groomed since childhood to compete in his sport, MMA is a sideshow.
Agreed. They all look so sloppy, and the UFC is full of second or third class athletes. They've never had a Floyd Mayweather, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Vasyl Lomachenko type fighter who's been born and bred to the sport, has been training since he was six years old, is a legacy from a family of fighters, and it shows.
ok, mid 50's would be around 25 million and mid 80s would be 200 million. perhaps you are correct in pointing out that the popularity of boxing, per capita of available audience, was greater in the 50's, but the popularity of boxing in the 80's dwarfs that of the 50's on sheer number of watchers and inclusion in every day culture, worldwide.
The main asset of ufc is the best always fight the best or even the second best . in boxing that's normally a mega fight that happens maybe once a year. Hence why it looks like they have rubbish records compared to boxing. There are no puffed up records or ourneyman in ufc. If you get there it's to win always Boxing is a joke with all the promoters having the power and multiple belts. It tarnishes it. Only reason people watch ufc is the hope it will end up being a glorified boxing match anyway They should end the w??/I?? And make one 'belt' boxing would be great again And also end ppv. If the best always fight the best, then why were the odds for the first fight between McGregor and Diaz like 42/1 like Spence vs Bundu? Diaz is a scrub. And the fact that he could beat McGregor says a lot about McGregor too. They are all journeymen fighting other journeymen. There have been maybe three elite athletes in the UFC ever and they didn't fight each other. Promoters have all the power in mma and there are multiple belts. Every promotion has their own belt. Bellator, World Fighting Championship, and One Championship have their own belts the same as UFC. I doubt any of them rank rival promotion's fighters. I agree with this last part.
