What top boxing paydays?

Outside of Mayweather (who is retired) and Pac (who may not get $20 million for Vargas), there's not a lot of big purses these days.

Canelo is going make less than $5 million for Smith. Nobody is getting more than $10 million these days.

$15 million for McGregor and $13 million for Diaz represents a huge leap for MMA fighters and that's bigger than 99.9% of boxing paydays.

 

No... just no. Algieri is a low-level kickboxer who never compete at the elite MMA level.

He will never be better than McGregor. The Diaz brothers regularly spar with Andre Ward and hold their own. McGregor blew up to 170 and took on one of the toughest guys in the sport. Algieri is a creampuff compared to Diaz.

If Algieri think he would make it in MMA, he would go to MMA.

 

McGregor was gassed after about 6 or 7 minutes despite not throwing too many punches and taking next to no punishment. Couldn't believe it when I was watching - the hell are these guys doing in camp?

Makes you appreciate what you're watching when you see elite boxers.

There's actually a fair amount of mma fighters who've been training since they were children. And I haven't seen anything that would indicate that they were better than their counterparts because of it.

 

Good payday. Good to see Diaz get the pay day as well.

 

Wondered the same. It wasn't like a blistering pace was set. He was picking his shot, and beating the **** out of Diaz one punch at a time, then just gassed. McGregor will be in trouble against any top guy that he doesn't KO in the first couple rounds.

 

how many. and who, for example? most of the ones ive seen started and excelled in a particular discipline, then they incorporated others to round out their game. these kids are learning boxing, jiu jitsu, wrestling, kickboxing, etc... all from day 1.

 

He also threw about 30 kicks in that time period. That expands more energy than throwing punches. You should try it.

Once Diaz got him to the wall of the cage in round 2, he expanded even more energy fighting the take downs from the bigger man.

In boxing, you only have to worry about punching and avoiding punches. You can maintain your energy level better when you don't have to expand energy in other ways.

 

I stand corrected, I was referring to those that have practiced a particular art since a toddler, such as the Gracies with bjj, Machida's karate, and so on.

 

This whole talk about purse got me thinking about Ward's situation.

Ward and the Diaz brothers live in the Bay Area and they're good friends. Ward's overall net worth is about $2 million. Nate Diaz is now 6x the worth of Andre Ward after 1 fight... well, maybe 4x after taxes.

I bet Ward never saw this coming and neither did Nate. I bet boxing fans never saw this coming either.

 

I guess people are going to conveniently forget clinching exists when it suits them.

 

clinching is not the same as fighting a takedown. Clinching is just clinching and some fighters don't clinch.

Fighting a takedown requires tons of energy. And trying to take someone down requires even more. That's why Nate was also tired, despite stories of the Diaz brothers having a lot of energy during boxing sparring.

Get a partner and try to take each other down for 2 minutes. See how much energy you burn and how tired you get after that 2 minutes.
