Great ****ysis and it proves with Toney that size isn't everything in boxing. There's quite a few at 160lb that would have beaten Toney and most of them wouldn't have a prayer of beating some of the heavyweight fighters he did. The fight game is fascinating that's for sure.....
Thank you, It took quite a long time and I'm proud of it. Toney is one of my all time favorites. Just though classic might like it.:good
IMO, conditioning and lifestyle (and RJJ) were the only thing that held Toney back from being a huge superstar. He had the skills, the mouth and the personality to be huge but he just didn't get it together.
Ive been watching boxing for almost 40 years, Ive written a book on the subject, and studied the history of the sport in a great degree of detail. I find it absolutely hilarious that I never heard the term "Philly Shell" until a few years ago and its always in relation to two fighters from Michigan who have no ties to Philadelphia. Wanna guess why? Answer: Because its a stupid ****ing made up term that never existed before for a tactic/style thats been in use for a century and has nothing to do with Philadelphia.
Maybe, but I think that detracts from Escudo's fine work here (or has any bearing on it at all, really). Sometimes silly slang words catch on and permanently change the popular lexicon, whether we like them or not.
Nice article Seeing Toney hit Ruiz never gets old. You can see how shot Holyfield is in his part of the video.
Cant say i agree with u there. Im from Phila and trained in gyms all over wen i was younger and its a very common style here. George Benton may have been its finest practitioner.
This is what I heard too. Benton created/adapted the style and trained other fighters after his career was over.
I recall. I also recall him countering Ruiz to death. I recall a average sized chubby guy going life and death with a guy who had a chest like a redwood and hit very hard. Chin, speed, skills and the ***** to get in the ring with them. I also recall that this wasn't an article about those fights at all.
Robert nobody ever used the term "Philly Shell" and are you really going to try to tell me that Bentons style was originated in or perfected in Philly? Lol! Very common style in philly my ass. Should we go down the list of Philly fighters who made the "Philly Shell" famous? Or would you care to save yourself that embarrassment? Would you care to tell us the first time the ancient mystical style was termed "Philly Shell" in the popular culture or do you contend that it was a secret underground movement and thats why NOBODY heard of it or uttered its name until well over 30 years after Benton was retired? I mean, you have a list of great and near great Philly fighters thats as long as my leg and the ONLY fighter you can say MIGHT have used it trained dozens of fighters, none of whom utilized that style or ever mentioned it, and had nothing to do with the two MICHIGAN fighters who always get attached to the "philly shell" and who themselves had nothing to do either stylistically or in training sense with each other. Look up the so called Philly Shell and even descriptions of it are all over the map. Some compare it to the crab defense, others tout the shoulder roll which Toney and Mayweather both relied on using different styles and which most often associate with the Philly Shell. Problem is that shoulder roll move has been used decades before anyone ever uttered the made up term Philly Shell and by people who had nothing to do with Philly and predate Benton or any other Philly fighter fighting like that. Pretending that the shoulder roll is the bedrock of some made up Philly style is like pretending Philly also perfected the jab, or the bob and weave. Its a tool in the tool box. Like I said, show me an interview, article, radio broadcast, tv, anything that mentions the so called Philly Shell before the late 90s or 2000s and Ill eat my hat but you wont because I love Philly boxing from the clubfights to the stars and have made it a point to gather as much as I could on those fighters and guess what: In all of that data, films, radio broadcasts, video, interview tapes, newspapers, magazines, programs, posters, tickets, books, you name it there is an absolute black hole in regards to the made up nonsense term Philly Shell.
why aren't you talking some forgotten african language? is it because language evolves? of course it is you pedantic ****hole.
