Very, very few people here "count Louis out" against super heavies. We're just not delusional about some of the risks and challenges he might face against certain larger opponents who have skills, talent, and the ability to use their size to their advantage (something that really separates the 220+ heavies of the last 30 years from their predecessors).
Being fit as a whippet doesn't help when you have to carry around and get hit by a guy weighing 40 pounds more. Sorry, bud.
Where do you get these far fetched ideas? You seriously think that the super heavies of Louis and Dempsey's era didn't know how to use their size against smaller men? Now I know you are seriously trolling. You couldn't have possibly watched Dempsey vs Willard (just to name one) and not seen how Willard attempted to use his size advantage. What do you see as using size to advantage? Klitschko leaning on his opponents for 2/3 of the round then throwing a punching at the end? :roflatsch
Break it down then. School me on how Willard went about using his enormous (6-inch height, 6-inch reach, 60-lb weight) size advantage to maximum advantage against Dempsey. Throw in some other fights too, please. I'm always interested in learning more about this great sport.
To answer your question in a nutshell though, the main fundamental difference is that tall, long heavyweights became much, much better at controlling the distance at which the fighting takes place.
And, yes, knowing how and when to hold & smother your opponents is an incredibly valuable skill for a boxer his size. Much better than backing straight up, flailing about, and trying to swat away punches like Willard, for example. PS - Worth keeping in mind that Wlad does this to men who themselves would have been considered very, very large heavyweights in the earl 20th century.
Willard was a dangerous long range sniper. And he could use his footwork to evade rushes pretty well. His balance and movement is smoother than most SHWs. https://streamable.com/ukbj Willard was dope
He does it because he has **** stamina. It is strategical but only because the guys he is fighting don't have the stamina, lfootwork, or strength to keep him off. It is evident that without the clinching he has no offense. As shown in the Fury fight. He lost to a fighter who literally uppercutted himself in the face.
Fury does a ton of things including many that someone like Willard wouldn't imagine even trying. Can you imagine Willard controlling a fight against someone like Wlad by jabbing, using head movement, tons of lateral movement, an in and out attack, and level changes? Do Jess a favor and leave Fury out of this.
Cool. I get the feeling that you havent really actually watched many Wlad fights but whatever. Still waiting for you to tell me all about how Jess used his massive height, reach, and weight advantages as well as possible.
