Hardly hype. He chinned THE MAN at that weight in under 15 seconds, and stopped a top contender. If he was to beat Frankie he'd be the ATG at that weight.
What an unequivocal childish post! You had the temerity to spew such nonsense on an MMA thread, yet you lack the acumen to converse about sports in general! Not every country in the world looks to boxing in such high esteem. Peter Aerts is a kickboxer, he is considered a god in Holland. Stan Longinidis is a Muay Thai kickboxer, he is considered a god in Greece. Masato is a world class kickboxer, he is considered a god in Japan. Buakaw por Pramuk is a Thai kickboxer, he is considered a god in Thailand! Alexander Karelin is a Greco Roman wrestler, he is considered a god in Russia! Artur Taymazov is a freestyle wrestler, he is considered a god in Uzbekistan! The list goes on and on!
Not being pedantic.....but Buakaw "Benchamek" is no god in Thailand. He failed to win either a Lumpinee or Rajadamnern stadium belt which would class you as an elite level fighter even over a world championship belt. The best Buakaw managed was Omnoi stadium Champion, which is like divison 2. Thailand outside the fight scene new little of him even in the height of his K1 days which is seen as a form of lower level fighting art compared to pure MT in Thailand. He only really became a house hold name once he was basically finished and got on Thai fight and in the Thai newspapers due to is constant court battles with Por. Pramuk. He is now a celebrity, but no fighting legend.....in Thailand's illustious fight history. By the way he's Benchamek, hasn't been Por Pramuk for over 3 years. I think he spits every time he hears that name. Buakaw is a god outside Thailand. Infact very few of an endless list of elite MT warriors are gods in Thailand....they just don't elevate their fighting legends. Even fighters such as Samart, Samson, Veehapol, Khaosai, Deisel Noi, Seanchai, Apidet etc
Someone touched on it earlier, but boxing is bad for boxing. In about 2008 or something, boxing was everything to me. From watching Olympic prospects like Felix Diaz, James DeGale, Darren Sutherland etc. to the big names. Irish boxing specifically consumed a lot of my weekends with fighters like Andy Lee, Andy Murray, (kind of) Matthew Macklin, Bernard Dunne, Willie Casey etc. all having a spot on terrestrial television. I even recently found quotes of me calling MMA fighters boring and from a sport that never has finishes (huh? lol). But as I slowly watched more and more, I got exposed to some of boxing's faults. Because MMA is ran by organisations, the fighters don't have the power. They are told they have a fight, and typically they fight that person. GGG Vs Canelo is just one in the billions of fights that should but probably won't happen in boxing. Pacquiao was and probably still is my favourite sportsman ever, but the hell of seeing the delays in the Mayweather fight mixed with the constant top MMA fights always happening...it was an easy transition to make. In MMA you have meaningful championships and epic fights like Anderson Vs Diaz happening whenever the company wants them to. In boxing, you have suits ruining everything. Ironically, a lot of MMA fans support shoehorning the Ali Act into MMA, removing the power of the UFC, having "commissioned belts" like in boxing and giving fighters much more power. Aka...we see people being bitches to make more money. CM Punk Vs Mickey Gall will get some stick, but this is a 0-0 fighter Vs a 2-0 fighter. If a hyped guy in boxing debuts, it's like a 0-0 fighter Vs a 1-37 fighter who's just there for a pay cheque. Boxing is filled with one guy wanting to win, and one guy wanting some cash. So in short, no, McGregor isn't bad for boxing that much. But with a popular guy, he'll bring some eyes over to the other sport and once boxing fans develop an appreciation for grappling, kick boxing and whatever else, cheering for a submission as much as they cheer for a KO...the better structured sport has a much higher chance of taking fans away like myyself.
