After coming out of 2 years retirement in1950 ,Louis had ten fights , he scored 2 tkos and one ko,would any of those he beat by decision have lasted the distance with a prime Louis?
Louis himself said his last great fight where he felt he still had his power and reflexes was in1946 against Tami Mauriello.

No one said he was feather fisted ,but Louis said his right hand "did not leave him any more," he had to think about throwing it and by the time he had spotted the openings for it they were gone before he could react.
He was getting by with the remnants of his jab.
N B Valentino was blind in one eye when he did that exhibition.

Dempsey was washed up in 1927 compared to his killer days when he fought Willard but he was still a comparatively fresh washed up if you know what I mean.

Louis had had some hard years of fights and long breaks from the ring that didn't help him at all.

Dempsey would have beaten the Marciano version of Louis.

That version of Dempsey was certainly less faded than that version of Louis.

Not sure if that necessarily means he would beat Louis tbh.

Louis still had an incredible jab but wasn't what I'd call defensively amazing, especially at that point in his career. Dempsey's got the advantage in speed, but I'm not sure either could pull the trigger any more.

It's a close fight and could become a boxing match rather than a shootout and if Dempsey goes on the back foot he could very realistically shut out Louis as he was slow and ponderous more so than ever.

Then again there's every chance that if Dempsey pounces Louis is too slow to avoid the fire coming at him.

The more I think about it, I give Louis a punchers chance here and that's it.

Old Dempsey still had that rattlesnake deadliness in that left hook,...but little else.

That Dempsey would have crushed the much older Louis .. five years of age, huge.

A 32yr old Dempsey who is in the ring because he wishes to be, beats a 37yr old Louis who is regrettably only fighting to fill the IRS coffers with owed taxes.

You're assuming the Louis of the Marciano fight still had his punch?

I think Dempsey would've did him bad.

You look at the speed and power he still had in the Tunney fights, and it doesnt look good for Louis. Joe would've landed some good shots in the clinches. He has a very small chance to land a special shot, but I just don't see it.

Louis was also really tough and had heart, so he would've gone down in a bad way like he did against Marciano.

He doesn't have to be prime Louis to still be a puncher. At that age he was a good boxer who had the ability to knock a guy out.

Valentino could've been fully blind, the punches that land still exhibit a degree of power that's above normal. You can tell by the way his body moves and reacts to the punches.

Louis lost his explosive speed, energy, and stamina. His hands and arms are still incredibly heavy, but he struggles to throw them. You can see the amount of effort he needs just to get that jab fired. And he's getting hit by punches he would've been countering when he was younger.

His results don't bear out your contention.

No doubt Louis could still hit. However his loss of timing and speed were striking. You can see during his fights at that time that rounds would go by and Louis would be jabbing but just unable to fire that right hand.

Certainly that right uppercut followed by an over hand right (very unusual combination from Louis) looked devestating.

Power which is usually the last thing to go left Joe Louis sooner than most, but he still had his jab.

The problem is Louis was never one for defense. He was too easy to hit. Charles really beat on him, engaging his toe to toe, and beating him to the punch.

Dempsey was much younger and still had his power. I think he wins here.

Charles fought an old Louis. Maybe Louis on one of his worst nights. Prime Louis had an exceptional defense for a boxer/puncher style.
