Maybe it can be broken down by division, fill in the rest if you please.

    1996-2016 ATG's

Heavy: Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Klitschko, Klitschko

    Cruiser: None.

Light heavy: Roy Jones. Kovalev if he beats Ward for sure.

    Super Middle: Calzaghe, Ward.

    Middle: Toney, Hopkins, and GGG

Welter to Lightweight: Mayweather, Mosely, and Pacquiao

Pac was definitely on roids. He's out of the discussion for me.

Pac, PBF and Wlad did all their work or all their work of significance during this period, so they're in.

Toney and Jones had broken through before 1996, so they don't fit with these criteria. Same with Ricardo Lopez.

Then you have Barrera, Marquez and Morales for example. And Vitaly. I can't really say with these guys. And perhaps you could say that Marquez and Barrera had broken through already before 1996.

DLH and Hopkins are borderline cases also I suppose, using these criteria.

    Mosley?

If Ward beats Kovalev without controversy I think he would have a case to qualify as an ATG already.

    Wladimir's a good call.
Lennox Lewis I'd accept, since I think most of his best work is from 1996-2002 period.

Barrera, Marquez and Morales are good calls.

I guess there are newer fighters active now who will go down as ATGs in time.

Just a question - what is an ATG? It seems that we have a load of top fighters listed on this thread but where do we draw the line and say that we are looking for the best of the best? The guys who are the pinnacle of excellence?

It's up to you how you define "ATG".
    I'm not sure either.

I'm not 100% convinced that any fighter mentioned on this thread would stand up as an ATG if we were to scrutinize them with the highest standards, but most of those mentioned so far seem like good candidates at least.

"Pac was definitely on roids. He's out of the discussion for me."

Then so are Holyfield, Mosely, Toney and Roy Jones, Jr.

I think Roman Gonzalez will be an ATG.

I suppose the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson would be a high standard.
Put every fighter in history against him as the measuring stick. A few would measure up, maybe arguably surpass him. And then others would come quite close but clear below.
It's possible that none of the names on this thread would even come close at all.

Yes, that's very possible, or probable.

Joe Calzaghe is smack on the timelin, becoming a top 168 pounder in 1997, but I doubt he's an ATG.

An ATG is someone who transcends an era.

Someone who on his day was that good that it doesn't matter when he was born, he'd still achieve greatness.

Michael Nunn would be a great MW no matter what era he fought in.
