Point is, you keep forcing me to agree with an opinion I don't agree with. If you want me to believe it then convince me. Otherwise STFU about it. What I'm saying, and it's really not that hard to figure out, is that in order to make a meaningful comparison involving common opponents the two situations need to be similar enough to eliminate most of the variables. That's the last I'll say on the matter as this is getting tedious. Uh, you are aware that's a body shot right?
But that's simply not true. Especially against anyone remotely rated as a decent fighter. I'm not knocking Tyson. I seriously doubt it is true of ANY fighter, in the whole of history.
So wait...are you saying that when a fighter gets knocked out they forget ALL of the punches that hit them in the fight? I can certainly understand that they would forget the power of the punch that knocked them down.
It's a far question .. Shavers is always credited as being the hardest puncher and he may have been but Tyson is somehow a bit underrated because he had so much more skill ... both were terrific, highest tier punchers .. if you look at Tyson , the way he destroyed Marvis Frazier in seconds, decimated Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas, Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks, Tony Tubbs ... it's a long list ..
Holyfield said Foreman hit harder than Tyson. Ali said Shavers hit harder than Foreman. Neither Holyfield nor Ali were knocked out by any of these men.
I've heard Leroy Caldwell often says Shavers was the hardest puncher he sparred with or fought. He was knocked out by Shavers, Lyle and Foreman in real fights. This content is protected
I don't think anyone's doubting Tyson has immense power in the highest bracket. He can punch for sure.
You know JT I've read a lot of folks saying Tyson was a lot of speed w power in a manner that diminishes the pure power. No doubt Mike was a monster. In my opinion , at his best the most dangerous combo of speed and power ever. Not the best fighter but very, very dangerous.
I hear you HG. IMO it's out of Tyson and Louis for the speed/power combo which is pretty high praise. I remember even before he'd fought for the title one of the mags had an article and guys were quoted what it was like to be hit by him and other such stuff. Man i wish i could find that article. My steadfast support for Shavers isn't because i think Tyson didn't hit with enormous power. Genuine one punch power for sure.
I'm not saying they forget everything necessarily. I'm saying their recollection of the events cannot be trusted to be 100% accurate. And if you don't recall the punch that knocked you out, which is likely to be the hardest shot thrown in the fight, then you're obviously missing a large portion of data.
That's a very astute point. Early in his career it was easy to assume that Tyson's KO ability came from his freakish speed, accuracy and combination punching. His raw power only really became apparent in the 90s when those attributes diminished. Nonetheless, the old holdover of his 80s iteration still holds sway over the rest of his career. There's like a blindspot to just how hard he actually hit.
Everybody knew Tyson hit like a ton of bricks right from the very beginning. His power was never overlooked, it was the first attribute noted. The rest blossomed from there, speed, accuracy, angles, defense etc. His raw power was what made him so exciting.
