Hopkins: GGG Should Fight Winner of Kovalev-Ward

    I'd be far more interested in seeing Golovkin role the dice taking a chance against the Kovalev-Ward winner, than I am in seeing him against the likes of Canelo, Jacobs, or Saunders.

    But if I were advising Golovkin, I'd tell him to continue on the path of least resistance, fighting welterweights, junior middleweights, and mediocre middleweight contenders.

    Well it worked for Hopkins throughout his 160 reign.

    It was much different though. Hopkins never received the type of hype or poster boy status that has been levied on Golovkin. He was never as well known, he did not have the full blessing of HBO, and he wasn't perceived as being head and shoulders above the rest of 160. Golovkin literally has zero worthwhile challenges at 160 - and for added insult, he recently took a fight with an unproven welterweight.

    As a fan, I'd like to see Golovkin seek out a challenging fight. But I understand the way the sport works, so I fully expect him to continue taking on safe opponents in mismatches for paydays. It's a shame, though. Reminds me of the way Roy Jones wasted his god given talent for so many years by not challenging himself.

    Whilst I agree to a point Hopkins style was never as fan friendly as Golovkin's and also as we all know he was notoriously awkward to work with.

    As a Golovkin fan I personally would like to see him fight Saunders, Jacobs, see if he can get a Canelo fight then a Derevanchenko type fighter or any of tge top 154lb fighters (if they step up). If none 9f this can be accomplished by the end of next year then he really has no reason to be staying in the 160 division.

    It's just a shame his early years where wasted away at the expense of Felix Sturm.

    Agreed, Hopkins never had a fan friendly style and Golovkin does.

    All the same, the only fight I'd be interested in at 160 would be Jacobs and Saunders - but Saunders is the only one that I think truly matters at this point.

    But let me ask you this. What would get you more fired-up as a Golovkin fan? Seeing him calling out Canelo again? Or seeing him drop a challenge ringside to the Kovalev-Ward winner?

    Why would he move up to 175 ?
    Golovkin barely enters the ring at 170.
    He would be outweighed by probably 15 or more pounds and giving height/reach.

    People didnt like the Brook fight, but he was as big as golovkin and heavier.
    GGG would be really small against Kovalev/Ward

    GGG can't make a good 175, he simply cannot get his weight that high except on a training camp of burgers or roids.

    Using Hopkins logic or lack thereof we would see either a roided up GGG, a fat GGG or a bout where Ward outweighed him by a good fifteen pounds come fight night.

    Never gonna happen anyway.

    I would've liked Hopkins to take a rematch with RJJ in 2002 ("60-40 and I'll whoop your ass") but he rejected it. I'm not questioning his greatness but it's easy to call fights when you're behind a mic.

    You will keep hearing the same GGG fanboys saying he is the better boxer than Kovalev, has a better chin than Kovalev, has more power than Kovalev, Knocked Kovalev out in sparring easily, but mention him fighting Kovalev and its GGG too small......
