I don't think Ward ever actually thought he was A-side to Froch. He knew cash cow Froch who can sell 80,000 tickets for a domestic fight, wasn't gonna play B-side to a man who can't sell a ticket and drives people away from boxing. His A-side routine (much like with Golovkin) is his way of avoiding fights (and drug tests outside of useless commissions) and keeping his deluded fans (both of them), deluded.
