What's with the high rating of Andre Ward? I see a lot of people refer to him as "the best" fighter in the world, the best "pound for pound", or have him in the top 2 or 3 at the moment. I can't see where he's getting this from. He had a few good wins a few years back. He hasn't done anything notable in the last 4 years. Chad Dawson, Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, Sakio Bika, Mikkel Kessler ..... that's about his entire resume, and it all happened 2009 to 2012, that was years ago. Two of those guys were Calzaghe's left-overs, and Calzaghe hardly has a stellar resume, and has been retired 8 years. Dawson was coming down in weight to 168, it was six years since he's made that weight, and the fight stands now as his only fight at that weight in the last 10 years. Besides, Dawson will never be mistaken for a great fighter. Carl Froch is probably his best win. That was almost 5 years ago.
That's the thing with Ward's resume. It just stopped after the clearly weightdrained Dawson, for who it took over 3½ years to be able to beat a borderline top50 opponent after. Also, it was clear that Ward didn't fancy taking risks since going up in weight, because he fought 2 dragged up SMW's and one actual LHW prospect, but nobody who could pose a serious threat. People like to bash Pimp Stevenson's resume after the KO1 over Dawson, but it's clearly better as Ward's.
because he is American....they do EVERYTHING to make them win and make US boxers seem like always at the top of the sport.
ok, if you have this standards, GGG has to be p4p no.1 without any questions or doubts. the way he blows his opponents ayway is absolutly matchless. no clinching, no ellbowing, no headbutting, no running. wards best wins: froch - a strong warrior, but skill? NO, and thats not even a secret. kessler - good fighter, calzaghe leftover, but only won because of clinching, ellbowing, and headbutting. horrible to watch. abraham - sauerland protected fighter. multiple gift wins. the moment he moved up, he was completly helpless. dawson - moved down, in my opinion the stupidest thing somebody can do. probs for wards win, but dawson wasnt himself. in my opinion this resume isnt better than other top fighter resumes.
I believe its because his nationality and due to a fact he is Olympic gold medalist plus he is one of the few top talent fighter from US. He should be on top 10 p4p, but its crazy to rate him above all those great fighters who have won belts multiple divisions, dominated their own division the last four years and so on. He is talented but he has flaws like anybody else; lack of stamina and power and his offensive isn´t as versatile as many other p4p top 10 fighters. In addition, if he is so good defensively, why does he fight to so dirty and fights so negatively?
Undefeated, won the Super 6, dominated world class super middles and a weight drained Dawson. His skills are also clear to see, he has some of the best foot work in boxing, is pretty fast and is one of the few fighters who are good inside, a skill which is becoming less and less seen these days. Technically he is one of the best in the game, if you can't see that YDKSAB. But there is no doubt he has done bugger all since beating Dawson. He has a lot to prove against Kovalev, he needs this win badly to confirm what many thought after he beat Dawson.
It doesn't matter much how his "skills look" if he's not fighting anyone decent in years, and hardly fighting at all. You have to be doing it at the world class level year on year to gain the "pound for pound" or "elite" reputation this guy has been given. You can probably say the same thing regarding skills about undefeated prospects who haven't established themselves. "Skills and talent" needs to tested and proven against the top fighters. On top of that, even his BEST WINS YEARS AGO are over guys who aren't great fighters. I mean, Froch and Kessler were very good, the others not so much (Dawson was 7 pound below his weight class), and he looked a bit scrappy against Kessler if I'm honest, lots of clinching, slapping and butting. I guess that's part of the skillset, to be fair. His punching seems to be somewhere under par for such a "greatly skilled" boxer. Punching is a skill too, and the only guy he's stopped in the last 4 years is Paul Smith, a man James DeGale already stopped in his 9th pro fight.
If I'm honest Ward has looked very ordinary in his last 2 or 3 fights. I probably never saw what was so "great" about him anyway. Maybe IDKSAB.
Ward is clearly very good. His resume tells the tale. Kovalev will be his acid test. If he can handle the Krusher then I will stake a claim for some space on his left nut.
