Holmes face good people like Shavers or Cooney, but outside of a few of the 20 defenses of Holmes, most of em were 10-0 or 15-0. Not even ready for the big leagues or Holmes level. I belive had Rocky or Dempsey or Louis fought all that Holmes fought(Not taking on the top ten guys later in rein) All would win imo. Your not going to try and say that David Bay would go 49-0 in Marciano's era, along with the heavyweight title are you?
I'd expect a tool like you would get hard over Lampley's excessive cheerleadings for Holyfield. Holyfield barely put a dent in Bowe... maybe on one occasion he hurt him in the first fight. And he did in such a matter that was hardly noticable. Bowe had Holyfield rocking constantly, and even managed to drop him. Small puny HW couldn't move the big skilled super-heavyweight Bowe. "Holyfield is probably one of the greatest HWs of all time." After about 30 consecutive shots. Marciano had Louis down with 1 shot, and Louis out with 1 huge right. Foreman said he wasn't even hurt bad, just off-balance. "Holyfield is probably one of the greatest HW champions of all time." Lampley, "But not in punching power." Foreman, "Probably not." Foreman on Marciano-Moore, "Moore had all the skills in the world but couldn't resist the power of the true Heavyweight, Marciano."
I recall some of Larry Holmes early amateur fights and I remember this 5"10 little white guy knocking him out in 2 fights, guys name was Nick Wells, 1st time Nick KO'd him in 3 but in the rematch Nick Ko'd him in 1, I also saw a few of his early professional fights and thought he was brought along well. When he beat Norton for the title, I liked his style and thought he was progressing but never thought he would be an ATG but the thought of him getting butchered by the little white stuck in my head, then this little black guy totally blasted him around the ring but it stuck in my head, Holmes cant beat the little short guys.....Marciano blast the jockstrap off of Holmes with that same right hand.. Now go get your shoeshine box and get back to work
And didn't Holmes leave on a stretcher both times? i know he did once. That's why a lot of guys weren't that high on Holmes as an amateur. And even without that real bad dq loss to Bobick, all a win would've got Holmes was a match with Stevenson--and that would've been a tougher matchup than Wells. If he ran away from the Bobick assault, what's he do with that guy back then?
It may have been devastating but people forget Larry had Don King at the right time and King controlled a lot of the strings in boxing with his street smarts and payola
I don't think so ,because Dempsey was a lot quicker and more elusive.Marciano was slow of foot he would be pot-shotted to death and ,in close handled like a baby.Dempsey fared well with giants, Marciano never fought any.
I'd give both of them their best chance against Liston. The others are imho probably a bridge too far for either Dempsey or Marciano, based on sheer size coupled with some world class skills to boot. Maybe Dempsey could stick and move against a Bowe or maybe Marciano could grind out a points decision against a Lewis on a Lewis off night, but I wouldn't put any money on it.
He beats all of them except Foreman and maybe Lewis. He was the best puncher out of all of them. He out guns Liston. His crouch would cause problems for the big guys.
