It would be a tough fight for both. I think if Bob Satterfeild could beat Nino Valdez and Cleveland Williams in the same era then I dont see any reason why Marciano cannot possibly beat Sonny Liston. It's the same kind of style match up as those fights.

The biggest mistake was the cruiserweight division. Rather than creating that division we should have had Superheavyweight. All the classic sized heavyweights could scale within a meal of the new Cruiser limit anyway...Liston included. Like Bummy says the stuff that made the biggest guys great was not available until later anyway.

Yeah sure. Crouchers caused problems for
    Liston =Pattersonx2 and Foreman= Frazier x2.
Marciano is a better puncher than Lewis,Liston, Foreman,Wlad? Oh okay.He proved this when?
Taking 9 rds to stop a 39/40 years old ex lhvy Moore,13 rds to rds stop 37 years old Walcott,9 rds to bludgeon Cockell into submission?
Can we have objective assessment please, instead of hero-worship.

    Liston would stop Rocky.

Or another way to put it is, I don't want to face the reality of this and its results so I'll argue about a semantic mythical 50's fighter against an equally fictional modern fighter thereby giving Rocky a," get out of jail card".
One of the most successful trainers of all time was asked to pick his best all time heavyweights ,as he didn't mention him, Emmanuel Steward was asked how about Marciano? He seemed surprised his name was mentioned ,and then said." no, he was too small to compete with the big heavyweights, had bad balance, cut easily and was too slow".
I reiterate, I always match fighters as they actually were, not some chimerical clone who has been processed through a time warp,so anyone not interested in assessing my picks on that basis needn't bother taking part in the thread.

Williams was a 20 years old 201lbs substitute for that fight. Valdez could not punch in the same ball park as the guys I have picked.BTW Satterfield was 6'2" with a corresponding reach.

Many British writers list Valdes power as Joe Louis like. Fred Nosher Powell who sparred both certainly thought so.

We both know Bob Satterfeild is incorrectly listed as 6'2" on boxrec. In real life Satterfeild was 5'10 or 5'11 as all film clearly shows Bob as being far shorter than Valdes and even shorter than 6' Ezzard Charles ...just as Marciano was.

Supposely the Archie Moore vs Nino Valdes fight in 1955 was for the right to challenge Marciano (though Moore did take a "tune-up fight" against Bobo Olsen a month later and k.o.'ed him, before fighting Rocky 3 months later). But if Valdes had won, we would have seen Rocky against a truly "big guy". Note: Valdes was on the downside of the curve, since he started fighting pro 14 years previous in 1941.).

Rocky did beat BIG guys, he beat Johnny Shkor.
Valdes was #1 contender when Archie Moore beat him for a second time. He was on no downside curve against Moore. Nino was younger than Rocky and still in the ratings in 1959.

Show ONE boxing writer that ranks Valdes power with Louis'.
    Provide Powell's quote.
Louis is ranked by the Ring at number 1 all time. Valdes does not make the top 100! It's total nonsense!

Shkor was a ham and egger with 18 losses including a one round blow out by Walcott and he gave Marciano a good fight! Using him weakens, not strengthens your case.

Shkor, who had just previously been KO'd in one round by Jersey Joe Walcott, was big and strong, and his mauling tactics were worrisome to Marciano for four rounds. Johnny stayed at close quarters and leaned on his opponent, trying to tire him out. Even so, Rocky did enough punching to win the first three rounds and the fourth was even. Marciano began to find the range in the fifth and knocked Shkor down with a left hook and a right to the eye just before the bell. Marciano came out in the sixth throwing bombs and Shkor was down for three nine-counts before the fight was stopped. Rocky suffered a left eyelid cut in the first round, which his handlers closed, but Shkor opened it in the third and it bled freely after that. The attendance was 6,072 and the gross gate was $12,081.

Colin Hart raved on Valdes power at a sportsmans dinner I attended, he also was interviewed on this subject by sky Tv.

I have a book written by Fred Nosher Powell and I shall lookup what he said of Valdes power tommorow. From what I remember he also raved on him.
