Wins are part of a good 'resume'. If I got fired from all my jobs my resume sucks.

What's your criteria for someone being a 'name' opponent? Why for instance is Groves a name opponent (for Degale) but Cleverly or Campillo (both Champions/ ex champions) aren't for Kovalev? Just curious - did you have a methodology?

 

Mostly just subjective.

Which is why I included their win/loss ratio. Some people think that Cotto is hot **** but he lost half of the big fights he took on and didn't do much better than Salido who is 3/9. That definitely has to be factored in. But I think it's also really revealing how many times fighters have been willing to step up too. Manny Pacquiao has had 20 major fights. Not only has he attempted more than the next two highest attempting fighters, he's won more than the next three combined.

Really, that should tell the whole story. Floyd and Manny dominated two decades in a row because they were the only ones with any balls. The biggest stars today have only fractions of their records. The best guys only have four or five decent opponents on their resumes.

 

Some journeymen and gatekeepers have incredible "resume's" if you don't care that most or all of them are losses.

 

Isn't that just oversimplifying a little bit? It's all about 'balls'? Promotional backing has a major part to play. Arum was the key player in the sport when Manny and Floyd where coming up and both got opportunities they may not have done otherwise. Also both were guys who started young and small and grew up through the divisions - without belittling their achievements in any way (they still beat the top guys in numerous weightclasses) this put them both in range of far more title fights/named opponents than guys who maybe reached prominence in their mid to late 20s and remained within one or two weightclasses. In short both had more 'name' opponents to fight. Furthermore both are near as dammit retired, you're comparing the resumes of guys at the very end of their careers to guys who have in some cases only just reached the top shelf. Also, as you acknowledge yourself you've essentially decided what is a 'name' entirely subjectively, FWIW your picks seem pretty reasonable to me on the whole, but it's no way to construct an argument.

 

The wins and losses are ALL that truly matter with one's resume. The reasoning on this forum is ****ing horrific
