The loss to Leonard was no landslide. Lots of people think Hagler won. I am one of them.

I loved the way Hagler walked straight through Hearns. That will forever be plastered into the minds of fight fans who witnessed it. " Tommy would of had to hit me with that ring post to stop me"

yes i respected those old school fighters, i also respect Hagler, Leonard & Duran. When i read the comments on this thread, i feel most are selling the great fighters of the past short. There is plenty of evidence to back up my theory, there is video footage available of 95% of the great 160lb champions.
could Hagler deal with Langfords dynamite bombs?
could Hagler win a single round against Roy Jones Jr. ?
could Hagler avoid being clobbered` by Monzon's heavy fists?
could Hagler withstand Freddie Steele's two-fisted attacks?
could Hagler brawl with Mickey Walker or Gene Fullmer?
could Hagler intimidate and beat James Toney or BHop?
could Hagler withstand the onslaught from Harry Greb?
could Hagler handle the power & skill of Ray Robinson?
could Hagler deal with the onslaught from Marcel Cerdan?
was Hagler tough enough to deal with Jake LaMotta?
how could Hagler deal with a boxing master in Ezzard Charles?
could Hagler deal with Bob Fitzsimmons?

Does a one point victory over an old lightweight champion in Roberto Duran, entitle Hagler to be favourite in the above H2H's ?
My own theory is, Marvin Hagler was very fortunate Thomas Hearns broke his right-hand in the opening round. Duran showed Hagler was "Nothing Special" and Ray Leonard completely exposed Hagler, with no excuses accepted. Hearns would have knocked Hagler Out... That is just my own opinion, others see Hagler as the Top 1 or 2 middleweight in history. One guy in this thread, even claimed Hagler knocks out Sugar Ray Robinson.

Although Hagler is definitely one of the Greats (and one of the best ever), I certainly see Frankel's point. None of Hagler's opposition were elite, a small few very good fighters, that is all. His opposition get overrated with time because we all love Hagler. A middleweight version of Hearns is his best win.

Hagler's resume of good and great fighters:
    Seales 2x
    Baldwin
    Finnegan
    Sibson
    Roldan
    Hart
    Monroe 2x
    Briscoe
    Antuofermo
    Watts
    Minter
    Obelmejias 2x
    Hamsho 2x
    Duran
    Scypion
    Hearns
    Mugabi

He beat most of these if not all by knockout and some multiple times. They are not all elite atg's but they were definitely tough, talented opponents. Better than some resumes. You can take any atg's resume and pick it apart.

Let's take Fullmer for example. He lost to Gil Turner and was knocked down for a 9 count when Turner was on the downside of his career then went on to struggle to earn two victories one of which was a contested SD. Then went on to lose again twice to less than elite competition. Just the fact that those guys were in the top 10 just goes to show the strength of the era. His win against Castellani was less than impressive for Castellani was at the end of his career and would go on to lose as much as he won. Got knocked out by a past it Robinson. Then drew with an ancient Robinson.

Fullmer was a strong burley fighter. that's it. So too was Sibson, altho a much better and faster combination puncher. I have a hard time seeing Gene get past Sibbo or even Tony Ayala Jr., seeing as how a 37 year old Ray Robinson flattened him with a single punch, flattening him like a mormon pancake LOL!

Every time I see it, I'm tempted to ask Gene, "hey son, you need a hand up?"

Yeah, Gene was one of the best in his day but only becuz Robbie was aged, and slowed, and besides Ray, who else was there?

Gene would just be another contender in Hag's day

I kind of DON'T see his point!

What does Fullmer have that the others don't?

We have seen that his chin is but mortal

I don't see any attributes Gene had that others don't, no extraordinary skill in particular or combination of skills

I think he would best James Toney, and perhaps Nunn on a bad day but honestly, he's nothing special

Why do you think nobody talks about him?

The only reason Fullmer ever held a championship, is that he didnt fight in Hagler's day.

In fact, had he fought during Hagler's time and departed around the fifth (if he makes it that far), the critics would've responded with the usual "Hagler destroys another crude non entity. Whom has he beaten?"

don't listen to this piece of **** post! What is Gene going to try in an actual fight?

is he going to out jab him? quite the contrary. Hagler, a southpaw, will hit him from the blindside, snap snap snap! goes hagler's right jab,, while Gene wildly rushes in for more. Red, red, red goes Gene's left eye

Hags either closes his eye shut (ala Juan Roldan) or slices it like a finely cut pastrami, adding body shots simultaneously, and taking the starch out of him until finally, a right hook to the temple puts a badly bloodied N bruised Fullmer out of his misery in the forth

A 37 year old Robinson does the trick in five. Hagler at half speed, does it in four or better.
