Of course not. But I strongly suspect that people who understand the logic of and appreciate the value of particular boxing skills and technique will get Golovkin's greatness immediately. Same with respect to Tyson.

PS- Suggesting that the appalled reactions to the early fight footage was just a film quality issue is a huge cop out and disingenuous. Guys were clearly alarmed by the technique, tactics, pace of the action, etc. that were evidenced in the early videos.

Glad you are open minded enough to see some of my points.

I'm not as optimistic as you are. Because today, we have the same issues with good boxers like Joe Gans, Stanley Ketchel, and more. I can't count how many times I've seen people criticize old school boxers for the same errors made by modern fighters.

There are some deeply rooted biases. Which I would mostly attribute to media quality, and the patterned thinking that new is usually better than old.

If Dempsey doesn't blow you away, neither would Tyson under 1920 cameras.

How about the guys Foreman had already beat like ranked contender Peralta twice and Chuvalo? In the fight previous to Sorrell, Foreman fought Luis Pires, 48-15-13 ,he had beaten Corletti x3 ,Lovell and Bonavena. Plus Foreman was 24 then Marciano was27 when he fought Shkor, and 31 when he fought Wilson.
In 1951, a year before he won the title Marciano was matched with.Art Henri13-15-1 he had won one of his last 6 fights, Keene Simmons 8-8-1won 1 of last 5, Harold Mitchell 4-14-1 he hadn't won any of his last 11 fights!
Let's not pretend Marciano was matched tough early on, he wasn't, plus his manager was the matchmaker for MSG,so he had things pretty smooth. Skehan states in his book on Marciano that Rocky wasn't learning anything from these kind of fights.

You didn't make the thread, I was referring to Reznik! There seems to be some serious issues with reading comprehension on this forum as witnessed by Frankel's surreal posts.

Most of us know that, but the keepers of the Marciano flame will never admit it!

This has to be he most appalling mismatch. It was not just Sorrell Foreman was feasting on as a #1 contender in 1972 because George also took on Joe Murphy Goodwin the same year who was 1-14 and unbelievably, 40 year old Clarance Boone who had won just three fights since 1957 having been knocked out an eye watering 14 times of his 26 defeats.

I'm saying their perception of what was happening in the ring was heavily influenced by the media quality.

I, for instance, see an amazing display of technique and ability when I watch Corbett - Fitz.

You seem to overstate the similarities and consistently ignore the profound differences in tactics and technique. We've been over this stuff before ad nauseum though. You can find examples of modern boxers making one off mistakes or doing all kinds of goofy stuff but it doesn't undermine the vast differences between 1890s and 1990s foghters, for example.

PS- Dempsey blows damn near everyone away. Doesn't mean we have to assume that he would be as impressive against larger modern heavies though.

And I see a lot of natural ability and ingenuity but a lot of inferior techniques that have long since been superceded by various developments and improvements. (I also see two men who probably would be too small to even compete at cruiser today)

I refer you to Marciano's cannon fodder the year before he won the title.

Mitchell 4-14-3 had lost his last 11,Simmons 8-8-1 won 1 of last 5
Henri won 1 of last 6. After Henri ,Marciano fought light heavyweight Willis Applegate who had lost his last 5and won 1 of his last 12 fights!
