i think the john tate who beat coetzee/bobick/knotzee knocks out any version of earnie shavers .....i think after he got kod by weaver he was mis managed after a horrid ko like that you need confidence builders and they put him in with weird herky jerkey berbick right after weaver loss ....after morrison got brutally kod by mercer he got sum tune ups ....same with tyson after toyko loss ....masquev after johnson loss ......i think john tate coulda done better as a heavyweight back then ...he was huge for late 70s early 80s 6 foot 4 and 232 lbs to 240 lbs ...threw heavy punches and straight ....anyway who wins and why john tate or earnie shavers ?

i agree John Tate would easily have taken care of Shavers.

I don't know. While John Tate had the boxing skills to school Earnie Shavers along with the physical size and reach to complement it, he also had some durability issues.. And if this fight happened it likely would have taken place around 1978-1979. We all saw the fight that Shavers gave Holmes and what nearly happened to Larry.

what "Fight" did Shavers give Holmes?.. for what i can remember Shavers was completely shut-out, with the exception of his knock down. John Tate could box, he had very good skills and was a big guy. Shavers never beat a fighter anywhere near as good as Tate. Ken Norton was nearly 37 years old and at the tail-end of his career, when losing to Shavers.

That's true. But that shot he decked Holmes with nearly ended the fight, and if most other men were in there taking that shot, it would have.

Renaldo Snipes hit Holmes with a shot which looked twice as hard as the Shavers punch. Mike Tyson leveled Holmes with devastating blows.

I don't remember Tate as having a great defence, although I thought he was big and very good. But damn, even a glancing blow by Earnie would have him out cold. Earnie wasn't as bad as some people make him out to be. I see Earnie getting inside on Tate and getting an early KO. Even if it goes rounds I think Earnie gets to him

    Tate.

Earnie had deteriorated by this point in time and those eye's of his would be in lots of trouble against the jabbers.

I think Tate lands his combos and moves his feet after throwing them. He did that well and that would not give Earnie that opening to dip down and fire--he needs to set those feet. Not exactly a tight rope act, but a disciplined effort see's him through. And Tate did fight some nice disciplined fights. I think Earnie lasts longer than Knoetze, but he gets busted up and stopped eventually. Like say the 10th round by the ref.

You are vastly overrating Shavers and also his punching power. Who did Shavers ever knock out who was of the class of John Tate?

I've seen it and I'm pretty sure John has as well. That shot was nothing like the one Shavers hit Holmes with.. Nothing.. Holmes was up immediately after snipes decked him, and rallied to win the rest of that round. He was literally seeing stars against Shaver. Watch both of them below.

Tate at his best should take care of business against Shavers. However, I would never bet against Shavers either, because he could catch lightning in a bottle semi-regularly.

Earnie came out fast and strong, and I think if he caught Tate it would be over. Someone asked who'd he ever knock out? Young, Ellis, Norton, Bugner ....ever hear of them?
