easily vits h2h, because of wlads chin. He would smash wlad out. but wlad obviously had the better career, he was willing to fight consistently at a better level that vits, thereby inheriting several losses but at least managing a slightly better average class of opponent.
Wlad had a better punch variety and power, but an average chin. Vitali looked like Frankenstein Does Boxing but as awkward as he looked he was effective, with a great defense, great chin and spot on accuracy. To sum up: Wlad has the better resume, but h2h Vitali would grind him down and out.
Wladimir is a historically great heavyweight. Hyper-talented big man who was the dominant force in the division for a decade. Not at all crowd-pleasing under his second incarnation, sure. Not the mentally strongest fighter in the ring. But give credit that he came back from devastating losses to have a great run at the top of the division. Vitali is more of a head-to-head monster. Very effective, more game, but sat out 4 years and left the memory of an old guy with bad knees and a bad back fighting on (and winning) past his pull date.
Wladamir is the more accomplished fighter, by a very considerable margin. It didn't necessarily have to turn out that way, but it did. Any argument that Vitally was better in a head to head sense, would have to be very subjective.
Wlad's the better natural athlete and had better basic fundamentals and technique. But Vitali was the better fighter. Better lateral movement, greater punch variety, better counter puncher, better head and upper body movement, better reflexes as well all of which made him a better boxer from range. He could use a hands down style make guys miss and counter with a variety of shots. He didn't need to resort to clinching as much as he could create and control distance better than Wlad ever could. Vitali also had the better stamina, work rate and chin of course. It's pretty clear to me head to Vitali was the better fighter. Sanders beat Wlad and Vitali beat Sanders. Peter dropped Wlad 3 times while Vitali stopped Peter in 8 and even after that a more faded Peter went 10 with Wlad. But if we are talking achievements and resume Wlad is the clear winner. I'd rank Wlad higher on the ATG list but Vitali would always beat his little brother.
Someone perfectly summed them up on a documentary, saying that Vitali was like concrete (hard to mould, hard to break) while Wladimir was like clay (easy to mould yet breakable).
A lot of people are saying that Vitally was better head to head. While this is certainly plausible, I don't think that it is very well supported by the evidence. We don't really have the data to back it up.
Vitali was the better fighter but I wouldn't say he was the better boxer. He would always have the voodoo over his younger bro, tho.
