After Frankie Gavin missed weight, Mathew Macklin said Gavin might be the greatest amateur product Britain ever produced.

He's an amateur world champion, sure. But does anyone really agree with this claim?

    Thanks.

Macklin sounds like a nice man, I've never met him but he is probably a real gent but he talks utter cobblers.

The people Macklin chooses as friends and investors would suggest that he's not as nice a bloke his friendly TV demeanour would make him out to be.

    Scotlands Dick Mctaggart.

Gold at lightweight at the 1956 Olympics and Vale Barker trophy winner for best stylist at the games. He won bronze at the 1960 Olympics.

    1958 commonwealth lightweight champion.

    1961 Europian lightweight champion.

5 times ABA champion. 3 at lightweight 2 at light welterweight.

Retired with a record of 610 wins out of 634 bouts.

    MBE.

The world amateur championship wasn't around in Mctaggart's days. No doubt he would've won that as well.

In answer to the question, Khan could have well been an Olympic legend had he decided to stay amateur. Less rounds to navigate, headgear. It's like the recent format was built with him in mind.

Erroll Christie could have gone on and been one.

Amir Khan? The guy won silver at 17 losing out to a 2 time Gold medalist in Kindeland and won most tournaments before then.

Not really. Didn't win a commonwealth title (not sure if he fought in one), and was silver at the world championship. Great amature though.
