I don't think either one had a great chin. Bowe's powers of rcovery were greater than Lewis. I'd say he had better heart too, except for Lewis' last fight, where he was getting a shellacking from Vitali, and yet dug deep to mount a great comeback. So Lewis was not a quitter. That said, technically and power-wise, Lewis > Bowe. I think Lewis was a smarter fighter than Bowe.
His defence was woeful. It's like, even if the other boxer threw a feint, it wold be magnetically guided onto his giant chin. I like Coetzer, he had an attractive style and a good chin. He just didn't have the pop to compete at the highest levels.
It's his manager's fault. The fight with Morrison was talked about after Morrison beat Foreman. Rock Newman who managed Bowe pulled out. Clayton who managed Morrison at the time said Bowe's manager linked with the Nation of Islam did not want the fight. It would have been a huge PPV event. If your strategy as a manager is to avoid until so and so losses, it's another way of avoiding someone, isn't it? If you wait long enough the fighter either gets too old or losses. I never read Mercer vs Bowe was in line. I'll take your word here, but would like to read about that. Judging by how easily Golota rocked and hurt Bowe with punches, we can see why Newman avoided punchers.
You nailed it. Say no more. Coetzer was the Botha of his times if you will. Durable and game, but slow and not a big puncher.
Now provide one shred of proof that Newman ducked Morrison. Newman sued Dino Duva for withholding Morrsion and refusing to match him against Bowe. Everything you said is a lie.
Or from 1990-1993 when Coetzer was 29-31 years of age, he fought 10 and only had 4 KO's. He could not finish some journeyman, and the only KO of note for his entire career was Johnny Du Plooy, and blown up cruiser, and that was wild one where both were down and Coetzer rally to stop him in 2 rounds.
I think Golota was a bit better than his later record suggests. I also think his mental problems derailed his career. Despite me ragging on Bowe, he was no bum and would have been a stiff challenge for any top guy. Yet Golota was simply picking him apart, timing him, out jabbing him ... you name it. If Bowe had known how good Golota was at the time, I doubt he would have taken the first fight. THAT SAID, I give credit to Bowe for rematching him. He knew what he was in for and decided to take round 2 regardless.
Du Plooy was a bit of a glass cannon. He had enough power to get the attention of the top guys, but not enough chin to beat them. During the Bey fight (where he won by KO) you can overhear him saying to his father that he wanted to pull out because he was messed up. His old man told him to just keep circling and he would find an opening. He did.
The guy who fought Holy 3 times would be afraid to fight Golota. Even though he fought him twice?? You're an absolute joke..
Even Holyfield said that Bowe only fought him because he had a significant size advantage. Bowe was a bully and a dirty fighter. He got his comeuppance at the hands of Golota, who dished out a career-ending beating on him. Cry me a river.
Bowe had good recovery powers. sometimes seemed hurt but fought back reminded me of Holmes in that he normally found a way to win.A fight with Lewis would have been interesting I think in the early nineties bowe would have out worked Lewis with his better inside work latter in the decade Lewis stops him.pity we never got to find out.
