right, a few years ago this kid was the second coming for matchroom middleweights, stopped a game eamon okane (still his best win) and had a very close fight with billy joe saunders (which I thought he won) but ever since then hes been a bit hit and miss. outboxed Blackwell before falling apart and lost to arnfield last month, now I know the cards were terrible but still he should be stopping arnfield. I think he could do with a move up in weight, he always looks like a bag of balls on the scales and looks to muscular for middleweight now he has grown. would like to see him step up with the likes of paul smith and see how he gets on. thoughts?
Agree with nearly all you say, but my issue with Ryder is he's too one-paced and, therefore, predictable. Opponents eventually tune in to the rhythm of his boxing and start to time him. Even if opponents are less talented, his predictability will nearly always see him come up short above domestic level. The BJS performance was his career best, but while Saunders continued to improve after that fight, Ryder has stalled. Maybe a change of trainer might bring a new dimension to his style, but to be honest, I'm not sure he's that good, for the reasons outlined above.
john isn't a big enough for super middle mate that's why he needs to stay at middle, john is a talented boxer but may be leaving a bit in the gym due to making weight, only a thought

Looks predictable and one paced after about 4 rounds. Then becomes easy to hit. Then doesn't have the technical skills to fall back on. Sloppy jab and chops with the right hand. Then isn't big enough in either dimensions, power or strength for 168. Sorry , sounds harsh but this is where he is at. Sounds a nice kid though and this is the toughest sport.

Just seen sims on telly. But he strikes me as really thick, sorry. Hasn't impressed me watching his corner work on tv at any rate. Isn't a lot of his stable due to him being connected to Hearn thru marriage?
as already mentioned, predictable. even when hes winning on the outside he wants to rough it in the inside.
I think it's simplistic to say that. He doesn't 'want' to fight inside..it's just in any fight as the pace slows it goes to close quarters. John lacks the athleticism to keep up the evasive movem NT of the early rounds. That's how he gets into trouble. It's not that he is predictable, just not athletic enough.
John Ryder to me seems to have Degale syndrome. That being the inability to fight to a sensible plan 3 minutes of every round. He very rarely puts on a 'complete' performance and does every fight the hard way. It's a pity because he has shown in so many fights that when he is on song he can produce some great boxing. But I struggle to see how he can move beyond domestic level if he continues to perform the way he has recently. A move up in weight may not be the answer.
Really is a strange one with Ryder. I thought, especially after running BJS close, he would make some noise but it hasn't happened for him. I actually tipped Blackwell to beat him at the time, but the way the fight started Ryder looked like he was going to run away with it... but Blackwell started to time him and took over shortly before stopping him.
He has slick skills and cute moves etc that look very impressive against lower level opponents but he lacks the fitness and athleticism to sustain the pace necesssry for success at higher levels....that's when he gets found out. I don't think it's fixable, unfortunately for John Ryder.
well, he has now revealed that he is moving up to super middleweight. not sure its the best move but only time will tell. think he can get at least british shot at that level, and could easily wrap up the English title along the way
He's a strong MW, but I think he'll be too small up at SMW. I know he boxed Groves & Buglioni as an amateur, with the pair of them now boxing at SMW.
