Gee, lets see, how many big fights did Tua win? He beat a young Rahman (has to hit after the bell, then take advantage), Tua never really beat a high ranking contender. He rallied late to KO Maskaev, beat a young Ruiz in 19 seconds, beat a fat, over the hill Moorer. Who did he beat? Lost to Byrd, lost to Lewis, lost to Ike.
Prime Tua would be locked up for murder if he faced these two chinless buffoons of today, Wilder and Joshua.
According to some on here, head to head he virtually beats anybody, so he would have to be ranked as No 1 of the non belt holders.
Moorer weighed 3quarters of a pound more than he had when regaining the IBF title for Shultz and one pound more than he scaled when defending against Holyfield. Tua was at 24 some months younger than Ruiz who also had more fights under his belt.
Tua's one of the most overrated fighters on here, he had a deadly left hook and good chin but nothing else. He was a contender in his era but nothing more and he wouldn't be in most other era's but at this moment I would pick him to beat both Wilder and Joshua but that could change if they start fighting and beating better fighters but both the Klit bros would school him and so would Fury.
He also had a good right hand the idea that he was a one handed fighter is a fallacy.Which era's do you think he would not be a contender in?
I said he would be NOTHING MORE than a contender most era's, please read. In this era for instance he probably WOULD win a "world title." Because like I said right now I would pick him to beat Joshua and Wilder and 1000% Charles Martin but the Klits outclass him and so does Fury providing Fury doesn't get careless.
He was a tough fighter. Never stopped despite facing plenty of big hitters and his own punching power speaks for itself. His resume isn't terribly deep but not at all bad either. There are quite a few non belt holders I'd rate above him though. Jerry Quarry, Sam Langford, Harry Wills, Bob Pastor, and Jimmy Young are just some of them.
Easily. The odd thing about Tua is he only had one shot at the title. This content is protected Holyfield did not fight him for the title Bowe did not fight him. McCall and Rahman did not fight him either. His title shot came vs a prime Lennox Lewis, who easily outboxed a gun shy Tua. On Tua, he'll beat most sluggers, and is the wrong style for pressure fighters in general, but he can be outboxed by a much taller and longer man, but he'd better have a good defense and solid chin just in case Tua lands a good one.
Tua was a contender in perhaps the deepest and most talented time in boxing, the 1990's. He has KO wins over Moorer, and Rahman, two lineal champions. He has KO wins over alphabet title holders in Maskeav and Ruiz. I think he could have been the lineal champion in many decades if given the chance, and even upset a top 15 all time great if he was younger and caught that fighter at the fight time.
Fair comments and some that I agree with.. Although it's a tad misleading to give him full credit for some of those wins. Hasim Rahman should have arguably beat him twice. Micheal Moorer was shot when they fought. And Maskaev was a 10 fight novice. Beating Ruiz as quickly as he did was a very good showing. But there's no denying that his resume is very thin and some of his wins tainted.
