After 3 months at the gym, today, my trainer told me that I'm his next golden gloves champion. My trainer has trained more than a few.

I'm cautiously excited. I always thought I had what it took, but it was amazing to hear it from him.

Have any of you guys fought in the Golden Gloves? Is it like the main competition for amateurs? I have no clue. I haven't had an amateur match yet. Any tips or or things I should know?

at the olympic training center there's a quote on the wall that goes something like, "train like you're the worst, play like you're the best". my take on this is to balance humility and confidence. i've witness many boxers allowing compliments to go to their head. the trick is to use the encouraging words from your trainer to propel you forward to keep doing whats working for you in the gym (discipline, enthusiasm, practicing what you're learning, etc), instead of using them as permission to slow down because you think you're ahead of the game. it sounds like you'll make the right choice. good luck to you.

in the US the GG is one of the nationally recognized tournaments. the difference is that i think its the last of the qualifying tournaments, which means that, after you are open class, you need to win the districts, then the regionals, and finally the nationals. most of the other tournaments (USA's, PAL's, Ringside, Title, Addidas) are all open tournaments which means that if you can get there, anyone can weigh-in/compete (as opposed to qualifying to get there).

Yeah, I remember the first time I got a compliment from my coach, I slowed down but caught myself. I recognized it right away, and never let it happen again.

I see. So it takes winning a few tournaments to qualify for the GG. Jeez, I wonder how long it will take.

To qualify 4 nationals you just have to win the regional one where I'm at. Usually they have tournaments state by state and whoever wins the open class for each one goes to nationals. Sub novice and Novice just win the state title. For a lot of fighters in some regions the GG is the only actual amateur tournament around worth anything which makes getting experience hard. The Chicago and Daily News GG tournaments are traditionally the toughest circuits.

Got it. And how do the tournaments work? Do you fight more than once? Is it 3 rounds?

you fight every Thursday, 3 rds 2 minutes per round. Look online at fights in our area from the 2016 golden gloves to get an idea of the talent in your area and the level you will go up against. Idk if an of that is different depending upon region so don't hold me to it. In the national tournament I think it is 3 3 minute rounds.

    lol good call.

Oh cool, I actually know some of these guys who won. I train with them, and some of them are my friends at the gym.
So weird, I woulda guessed they weighed less.

Old in boxing years. But I think my power equalizes my age disadvantage.

Well, if you are fighting smart, it wouldn't be much problem.
