I try to punch like Joe Louis, I can throw short 2-4 punch combos without sacrificing my stance or balance all that much.
I keep my left hook short. It's more powerful that way. Louis had perfect balance like you said and I too try to maintain that. I take away a little bit from many fighters. Dempsey, Louis, Arguello, and Hearns mainly.
After sparring, my partners would tell me that i was a "heavy handed guy", but i couldn't drop them, then i learned how to put some snap on my punches, when i punch hard i look on guys who punched with technique and snap.
Nice. I try to throw my left like Louis, but I don't get how he generated so much power while keeping his punches so short. Something I'm still trying to discover. My hook is more like Golovkins. The fighters I take the most from are Dempsey, Louis, and Marciano.
By keeping the hook short it generates more power. The hook is like a spoke on a wheel and the turning of the wheel is the motion of the punch. I think it has more power, at least for me, because I feel the shoulder is activated more compared to a straight right. I can throw them both ways and watched a lot of Golovkin to see how he throws his hook. For some reason Dempsey's style just clicked for me, as soon as I stated studying his film hardcore my punches had more power behind them. I assume it was because I'm always thinking about putting my body weight into fast motion.
Yeah I feel like when I try to keep my hook really short, I can't get enough leverage behind it. I'm still trying to figure out how to shorten it up without sacrificing power, and I'm confident I will discover the necessary form to do it. That awesome. Yeah, watching footage and reading about Louis/Dempsey/Marciano helped me more than anything else so far. The other main power puncher at my gym is Tyson/Dempsey type. He has really good head movement he combines with his swarm, and he can hit. I would love to see footage of your style. I'm gonna try to film myself on the bag when the gym is less crowded.
Nobody at my gym will hold a camera for me because it is open for only a couple hours out of the day but I think I could set something up at my house and shadowbox or hit the bag then post it here. I recently found a spot to put my bag up last week so I can use more footwork and combinations.
Just try to get it done in one instead of an accumulation/combination. That's my style. I feel like my right hand is a missile. Whether it's a straight, hook or uppercut, I'm very confident in it doing the damage that I expect it to do if I land. I suppose it's probably like Marciano/Benn/G-Man, if I had to name a fighter. I've found that when my balance is right, and it feels fine, that's when the power comes.
So I guess turn the shoulder over then. But on impact do you drive through the target or whip it back fast right after contact?
Try thinking of your shoulder as a catapult or a sling shot, and you're delivering your punch with an acute whiplash. Don't worry about being in a good boxing stance, just try different things until you feel that momentum. Incorporate the power into your boxing technique after you learn how to do it. Which might look silly at the gym, so you might want to do it at home shadow boxing until you can incorporate it into your boxing.
